NO! RD-0194 tweeters out of stock!

I ordered a pair of RD-0194 today only to be told they are out of stock until sometime in March. How can I wait that long? ;-)

  • Same thing happened last year also. I think it took a good 6 months for them to restock and they do not have a waiting list so you have to keep trying. When I blew #6503 SDA mw driver I found one on E-Bay for $19 so maybe you can find a pair of 194s there.

Are you guys repairing old speakers to refresh the top end or are you blowing the tweeters listening to music? Reason I ask is I've been told to watch the volume knob because I'm not feeding my A9s enough power with my pioneer sc-1227 avr.

They are drop in replacement for vintage Polk speakers. Significant upgrade from the sl2000 tweets.

I am upgrading from the SL-2000. They took my info and my card will be charged when they ship. So I will get them, eventually.

Any word on the 198's? I should have a couple pairs for backups, as there is no telling how long Polk will continue supporting the older speakers.

  • I still have my silverdomes. The RDO 194 by all who said are much better and they are. The sl-2000s sounded dried out a tad scratchy compared to the new 194s. Just an easy drop in and for $48 a piece this was an easy mod and an easier decision.

Let me play devil's advocate...I recently acquired pair of stock SDA SRS which sound pretty good as is, though a little bright. This means a 400.00 outlay. I know if I spend the money, I will want them to be better, significantly better. Can I trust myself to be objective, or will I be really just trying to rationalize my decision.

I have already replaced 7 midwoofers because the clown I bought them from must have dropped one of the speakers. By the way, I am a long time owner of Polks. I have 1Cs, 10As and Monitor 4s. The SDA SRS speakers were a long time dream, but the price of getting these rolling is starting to be a nightmare. We haven't even talked recaps yet. I certainly hope the 400.00 outlay is worth it. I know I will tell myself that.

Thanks for the info, wasn't sure if it was something I should be looking to upgrade my A9s to.

I suggest that, if you plan to do the "full" mods on your SRS, don't install RDO-194s. Go straight to the TL mods and RDO-198s.

They were out of stock for both the RDO-194s and the RDO-198s two weeks ago when I ordered some replacements but they said they would bill me when they came in. Do I have to keep reminding them or that this changed since your experience?

Hey, Skip has a pair of brand new 194s listed for sale in the FM with only a shipping upcharge. I can't imagine that would be more than $10-$12 extra by USPS Priority Mail (no affiliation). Might be worth it to some of you who seem to have your shorts ablaze about getting your upgrades done NOW!

If this were me, I'd do the crossovers BEFORE replacing the tweeters.

If money were still an issue, consider replacing only the main tweeters...at least to start with. If the other tweeters operate at reduced volume or are rolled-off in the upper treble, upgrading them should provide less improvement.

Can the original SRS be modified to accept the 198s? I thought that was an upgrade for the 1.2, but not the original SRS.

Well, yes..the problem is that a lot of us are seeking sonic perfection and we will never get there. There is always better equipment, a tweak here and there, but I guess that is part of the thrill of this musical treasure hunt.

Speaking for myself, I know no matter how far I go, I will never be satisfied. Like many of you, I have spent a ton of money and have a lot of equipment collecting dust.

I am on the fence about crossovers first or tweeters. Like you said, I might just order a couple of tweeters and replace the main ones first and see how it goes.

Xovers first. They will improve the stock tweeters, though not to the level of 194's. They'll also improve the overall sound.

I'm going to be upgrading my SRS 1.2s with RD-0198-1 tweeters and new crossovers and wiring (by Vr3 Mods aka Trey) within the next couple of weeks or so.

Unless my wife argues persuasively that the current sound of my SRSs is better than the TL'd sound, I'll have eight RD-0194-1 tweeters for sale soon. They are about two years old and have been treated with tender, loving care -- no kids, no pets, no smoking, no excessive volume!

I'll post them in the FM as soon as the "die is cast." :|

Who makes these tweeters, does anyone have a heads up in case they decide to no longer support? They are ordering 100-250 at a time from what I've seen. Are they just subbed out to one of their import makers? I realize that aftermarket would be sans the logo, but still should be easy for someone to take over. Replacement drivers are a thriving market as they are basically a consumable product with so many driving them so hard.
