First post.
Just picked up a pair of 10As for what I think was a fair price. They sound *fantastic*
Crossover upgrade will be the first order of business.
Yes, I know the rabbit hole is very deep

Those look to be in excellent shape, congrats and enjoy. Did they happen to come with stands to get them up off the ground?afterburnt wrote: »They didn't speak a word of English, they were from South Carolina.

They did not. I have the PDF that's been posted around the forum so I will build a set for them.
Or spike them. -
Better yet, build the stands and spike the stands. Monitor 10s don't spike directly very well.
-
Beautiful speakers. Looks like the Peerless sweetness is happening over there. What are you hooking them to ? Enjoy you new speakers & welcome to Polk tonyp..
-
Right now they're connected to my old Sherwood S-7650.
That will change after tax season. -

^^^^^This..., I spiked the stands (Polk originals) for my 7's. If you put rubber feet between the speakers and stands it won't matter however. Screw the stands right to the bottom of the speaker.
Very clean set of 10A's, BTW...Remember, when you're running from something, you're running to something...-me -
Congrats on the Speakers! I just love my 10's and use them for listening to music any chance I get. Enjoy them!
If you read back thru some past threads you will see all the things many of us have done to them like Hurricane nuts & dynamat Extreme etc...

Welcome to the forum. Still have my original 10a's from 1979. Don't know where the time went.

I was thinking that.
I know that most of the crossover rebuilds recommend Clarity or Sonicaps, but I'm not sure I want to go that deep into the wallet on these.
How much worse off would I be if I used lower end caps like Dayton or Solen, etc.? -
I have used Daytons for the low pass on some of my Polks and They sound fine. Anything should be better than the old components that are in them now. Dayton offers a 12uf at 1% which I used on an early Monitor 4 that had Peerless tweeters. I am planning to use some Dayton 1% caps in a set of Monitor 4.6's that are currently in my garage rig.

Always wanted to have a set of 10's. Have the 5jr, 5b and early 7c. I have a thing for Polk mointors and vintage receivers from late 60's to early 70's.Joey Ward

Thank you Dave.
I was hoping that you'd weigh in on this
I think I *will* do the Clarity ESA- PX option. It appears to be a good price/performance compromise. -
You're welcome. Good Choice. Don't forget the resistors either. Madisound carries Mundorf Mox, and the Clarities. Not sure if the Mundorfs are available in all the values you need. I prefer Mills MRA-12s over Mundorf. Soniccraft has the Mills in every value. Parts Express carries the MRA-12s as well, but their selection is limited, and their stock is from Mexico.Home Theater/2 Channel:

Yes. Mills are on the list.
As an aside.
Herself humoured me when I bought these.
But I put them up in our living room with the old receiver & have been randomly playing stuff for the last week.
Tonight is homemade pizza Friday & she asked "Are we able to listen to some old albums on this?"
So I brought up the old Dual.
The upshot is that *I'm* cooking tonight & SWMBO is happily carefully cueing up '70's folk-rock & dancing in front of the fireplace.
I think we have a keeper here folks.

Took the day off yesterday & followed WMG's advice.
Clarity caps. Mills resistors. Dynamat. Hurricaine nuts. Pushed the insulation back up where it belonged & stapled it in. Glued the MW magnets.
Even to my old ears the improvement is very noticeable.
Got them playing the local jazz station at a decent volume while we're at work all day & will do that for a while to facilitate the burn-in. -

What, did somebody say "Hokey Pokey"?
Glad you're enjoying the new-to-you Monitor 10s, Tony. You're in good upgrade hands with Dave. Absolutely love the sound my minty 10Bs put out! Keep us posted on how the burn-in goes. They should just get sweeter for you as time goes by.
-
Nice looking pair. If I were you and you truly enjoy their sound, I'd treat them as an introduction to Polk and go get you some SDA's afterwards. Much more refined sound, and a much bigger money pit.
No kidding!
See my new thread.
Bloody rabbit hole -
Feedback.
I followed WMG's advise on the crossover components. I went "middle of the road" with caps & resistors.
So, they've been burning in on jazz & classical every day for the past month.
Tonight is Wee Dram O' Scotch night & Relax time
I put a vinyl of "Wicked" on the Dual (Herself's favorite show)
Then "Kind of Blue" & "Time Further Out"
Sweet. Merciful. Jeebus.
I have a musician's ear & I'm pretty much blown away by the clarity & even presence.
I've read comments about some people here not being happy with the inherent bass/mid/high balance.
I can't agree. I find them nicely even across he spectrum.
More importantly, Herself thinks they rock her socks :-) -
Glad you're enjoying them. With the stands, and slightly toed in, they have a beautiful soundstage.Home Theater/2 Channel:

They look great. Those 7s and 10s are hard to beat for extended listening
and likeability. But you know that.
