Thanks for all the kind comments,

To answer the questions about his new job, he'll be doing refueling & maintenance on bombers. He can't wait to get started! He can switch it up down the road & venture into other areas if he wants.

    Congratulations.

It is intertesting that now you can get your assignment before joining. When I went into the Navy they gave everyone various aptitude tests in bootcamp, and then when you finished bootcamp you found out what you would be doing.

That must have been some time ago. I joined in '85 and knew what id be doing before boot.

Yes, May of 69. I remember the greeting as we were bused into bootcamp from O'Hare. "You're in a world of hurt". I guess things have changed since the military switched from the draft to volunteers.

Actually, the word isn't 'hurt'. It is a common word heard on TV for waste.

I went in the AF in March of '72. Prior to signing up, I took 4 aptitude tests (General, Mechanics, Electronics and Admin). If you scored high enough in a field, generally 80 out of possible 95, I think, you could get one of those 4 fields guaranteed. You wouldn't know what specific job, just the field.

I signed for Electronics but during basic training, they tested us for languages and/or Morse code and those of us that passed that test, they blackmailed into volunteering for a job in the Security Service. I ended up taking Russian.

If I had stuck with electronics, maybe I could actually rebuild my crossovers today instead of just ask the time in Moskva.
