It'a official...our son is an Airman!!!

My wife & I just got back from the swearing in/oath ceremony at Ft. Dix base here in NJ. Our son Phil is now on his way to Philly Intl. Airport en-route to San Antonio, TX Air Force base for his basic training. It was a very emotional day especially being our only child. Mom held up as well as could be expected but it certainly took it's toll. He's very, very, excited & pumped about his new career ahead of him. We both couldn't be prouder!!!

To answer the questions about his new job, he'll be doing refueling & maintenance on bombers. He can't wait to get started! He can switch it up down the road & venture into other areas if he wants.

Congrats, wierd thing here I was just watching a youtube vid last night before going to sleep and it was called redflag. Its the final part of the training and said to be more dangerous than real combat, check it out as its super interesting.

Red Flag is for fighter aircrew PFB, though they do mix it up sometime, and no, it is much less dangerous than dog-eat-dog air combat.

IIRC, red flag is a loose equivalent to top gun for the AF. But that's based on memories of us being stationed at Nellis when I was 6-9 years old, so that's probably not a great explanation. :)

It is a multi-service, multi-national thing these days... but yes, It's genesis was similar to that of Top-Gun.

Congratulations to your son and the proud parents!

I retired from the Air Force 3 years ago (also aircraft maintenance) and my last duty station was Sheppard AFB, TX. The majority of the aircraft maintenance tech training schools are there and it's more than likely his next duty station after basic. Tell mom he's in good hands! Lots of dedicated folks that will point him in the right direction.

My wife is still ative duty and we continue travelling the world. The sky's the limit (pun intended) and he'll have many great opportunities ahead of him.

    Best wishes to your family...

If you guys can believe it I was signing up and attending interviews. There was a death of some one very dear to me that I could not get over and I ended up drinking for a year. I was singing up for the movement that basically kicks big supply's of first aid and food to third world country's but I would have probably fallen out the back anyway and not be here typing.

It is intertesting that now you can get your assignment before joining. When I went into the Navy they gave everyone various aptitude tests in bootcamp, and then when you finished bootcamp you found out what you would be doing.
