Monitor 5jr in the house.

It has been a long time since I found anything good at Goodwill. Today I spied a set of speakers on the bottom shelf that some guy was standing in front of. I just about knocked him over getting to them when I seen the Polk name plate on them. They are only Monitor 5jrs from 1985 but in really nice shape and consecutive serial numbers. Even the grills only need a washing as there are no rips, snags, or tears. Both woofers pass the push test so no seized drivers. Both have blown fuses so tomorrow i will replace those and give them a listen so I can compare them to my Monitor 5A with Peerless tweets. I will rebuild the crossovers (once I get all the glue out!) and do some of the other upgrades. I do not know if I replace the tweeters yet, i guess that depends if I decide to keep them.
Not too bad for $15.49

Sweet. You paid too much Congrats enjoy your new speakers
Edit. The 5A's are a wonderful speaker also. Be interesting on comparisonPost edited by boston1450 on.. -
Nice score, been "skunked" myself for a while but I'm staging a comeback.

I have been listening to the JRs since mid morning. All types of music and volume levels. I have to say these do sound quite good. The lower end is about the same as the 5As I have them sitting on. The SL2000 tweeters are a tad harsh, not bad so it is something I could live with.
I think I will start off with the Dynamat, hurricane nuts and JB Weld along with the crossover rebuild. Next would be tweeter replacement followed by real wood veneer. I am thinking Cherry with a warm Mahogany finish.
I figure by the time I am done with both a pair of 7s will pop up and I will start all over! -

Anyone know if Mills even makes a 1.3 ohm resistor? Should I use 2 in series to make a 1.3 or just use a single 1.2 ohm and call it a day?

I would have never guessed the ported jr in a smaller enclosure would have as much bass as the 8" PR in a larger enclosure.afterburnt wrote: »They didn't speak a word of English, they were from South Carolina.
