Monitor 10 need help

One of my monitor 10's has been opened up at some time (i can see plumbers putty around all speakers). The other is still original gaskets. I opened the one with the putty and found it is almost completely filled with stuffing. How much is supposed to be in here? When i push on the passive the two mids push out but i can hear a slight bit of air coming out of the center of the tweet. The other cabinet does not make that noise. I plan on taking all the putty out and reasealing with foam just wondering how much filling should be in there? Thanks.
Side question: seeing as how the passive has no power, how does this setup make good bass?

It may not be plumbers putty but mortite rope caulk which is actually makes an acceptable gasket that seals better than the factory foam gaskets. There are better materials to use however. I rehabilitated a pair of Monitor10s a while back and used mortite which worked out pretty well for all intents and purposes. IIRC my 10's only had foam behind the mid drivers and tweeters and only a couple inches thick.Oh, Listen here mister. We got no way of understandin' this world. But we got as much sense of this bird flyin in the sky. Now there is a lot that bird don't know, but it don't change the fact that the world is happening to him all the same. What I am tryin to say is, is that the course of your life, well its changing, and you don't even see it- Forest Bondurant

The more leakage you have - the less bass you will have. Sealed cabinet is a must with a Passive Radiator. The 2 drivers movement causes Passive Radiator to produce bass. Hope i explained that right. 10's are Nice speaker BTW..

Just enough to be behind the tweeter and mids, you do not want any below the mids.i can hear a slight bit of air coming out of the center of the tweet.
You must have the Peerless tweeters and you must have a bad seal.seeing as how the passive has no power, how does this setup make good bass?
The PR is fluid coupled to the mid-drivers. Air is a fluid. It makes great, tight and deep bass with extremely low distortion.Political Correctness'.........defined

It's possible the Dacron slid down. If memory serves, there should be two pieces of Dacron. One is rolled tight, and stuffed in the top of the cabinet, above the center brace. The other piece is cut like a pair of pants. roll each "leg" and stuff one behind each woofer. This leaves a flap on the end. Tack the flap to the cabinet on each side and to the bottom of the center brace with 1/4" staples. This will prevent the Dacron from falling down again. The bottom of the cabinet should be completely empty.Home Theater/2 Channel:

then something is not right with my cabinet. it is almost completely full of the stuffing. yet another thing to figure out. So the area behind the passive should be completely empty?
-
Correct. The dacron should be no lower than the bottom of the 6.5 drivers, leaving the space behind the passive open.
-
Was the stuffing used from the factory white? (not the pink itchy stuff)

I opened up the box again and i have some differences here. My cabinet does not have a brace inside it. The dacron is stuffed tightly in the upper half of the box but dacron continues all way down to the bottom of the box though. There is a "pocket" for the passive sub. It's roughly 5" deep and same diameter as the sub. I guess it is factory. Would i get deeper bass with the stuffing out of the bottom? Should i leave some stuffing along the outer walls and bottom? I'll try to upload a pic. -
The bottom should be empty. There should be three rolls of Dacron. One across the top, and one behind each woofer. the Dacron should extend to the bottom of the woofer openings.Home Theater/2 Channel:

i guess i shall do some surgery..will removing the dacron increase the bass?
-
Yes. The Dacron should only be in the upper half. Bottom emptyHome Theater/2 Channel:

since i don't have any brace inside, i guess a couple of staples to hold the dacron up?
-

Hmm... my speakers look just like bcbud's on the inside. the bass is noticeably boomier with the lower half empty.
-
In that case you need to reposition the speakers. Likely, further away from the back wall and/or out of the corner if that is where they are now.Political Correctness'.........defined

Also, did you remove some of the Dacron from the cabinet, or reposition it?
Removing it, will have an affect on the internal volume, and how the cabinet was tuned.

Look in the other cabinet ?? That would answer a few questions right ??
-
i removed the dacron from the lower half of the cabinet. there is no way to roll that much back up into the upper half. I actually like the sound now.
-
interesting -- my model 10s, which have the dual fuses, have the full polyfill, and visually are filled exactly like the photo bcbud3 shows. it looks intentional during manufacturing, not like it's fallen out of place.

My model 11z were the same way however I read here that one should move the pollyfill away from the passive and behind the Midwoofers so I did. I have no idea if they sound better or worse as I did it at the same time I epoxyed the magnets and put on dampening material. I never listened to them before hand. May have been a mistake..
