This is probably a stupid question................but...........

I am in the process of fully modding and updating a pair of 2.3tl's. I participated in the last 1000va Avel Lindberg transformer group buy and love the way it improved the sound of my 1C's. But I do not like the black case sitting it the floor.
So my question. What the downsides of mounting a transformer in the bottom of one of the 2.3tl cabinets and wiring so the signal passes through the transformer.
Potential issues I can think of are:
1. It changes the weight of one of speakers significantly but that in itself should not create any problems.
2. The interior volume of one of the cabinets will be decreased making it slightly different from the other.
3. The wire length on either side of the transformer would be different. I am not sure if this would matter or not.
What do you guys think?

Weight won't be a problem.
Internal volume will be less, but doubt you would notice.
Wire length may pose a problem. essentially no added resistance on one side, and cable resistance on the other.
If you remove the transformer from the case, you're removing RF Shielding. The wood cabinet offers no shielding at all.
Why not build or buy a decorative wood case and put the metal case inside it.Home Theater/2 Channel:

Not a stupid question, but as F1nut suggests, not a good idea.Family Room, Innuos Statement streamer (Roon Core) with Morrow Audio USB cable to McIntosh MC 2700 pre with DC2 Digital Audio Module; AQ Sky XLRs to CAT 600.2 dualmono amp, Morrow Elite Speaker Cables to NOLA Baby Grand Reference Gold 3 speakers. Leave the box on the floor and put a small statue on it, or something decorative like silk flowers. I have a Buddha on mine. Be proud of the finely crafted box that Larry made. I wish my custom version was more visible instead of half hidden as it says bada.s.sPolitical Correctness'.........defined

That's the last thing I'd think of doing is hiding it inside the speaker cabinet. I was in the same position and didn't like the idea of 1 box either as it's not symetrical. Perhaps another black box even if it's an empty one to balance things out?
-
I tried a few ideas to.......an independant stand and statutes on top of the box wasn't what I was looking for. Through that experimentation though I did find that the dreadnaught does sound better (at least it does to me) on it's side. So this is what I've settled on for now and I'm pretty happy with it. The tables and lamps are matching and draw attention away from the single box in the back.
The box isn't noticable on the right unless you're looking for it but it's easily accessible should the need arise. -

Install LEDs in it. Have them dance around with the audio levels and frequency.

If you have a component rack, you could always make it one of the component stack.____________________________________________________________

The main reason i would not mount transformer in one cabinet is that the system would then be electrically lopsided. We tend to pay attention to many details to be sure each channel is as symetrical as possible to get the best sound we can. If this type mounting were used it would be lopsided due to the extremely short wiring for the one speaker and comparatively long wiring for the other. I would use an external box. and try to center it as best as possible between the cabinets and use an equal amount of wiring to each side.If con is the opposite of pro, is Congress the opposite of Progress?!

Yes I'm sure mine was the same stand as yours. I had done the same thing filling those tubes up with play sand. I replaced the suction cups with 1/4-20 bolts and used scrap pieces of kitchen countertops for my shelfs instead of the glass ones. The rack itself is long gone now. But I couldn't throw those top and bottom pieces out. They actually work quite well in this situation and they also keep things from bumping the bottoms of those precious speakers as well. -

Let me ask a potentially dumb question now. I've never understood the theory of how sitting spiked speakers on a slab of granite, slab of whatever etc. When its still sitting on carpet. Seems like it negates the intended purpose of the spikes. To couple the cabinet to the floor. Seems to me if the speaker is sitting on a slab on top of carpet. Its still "floating" on that carpet just like a non spiked speaker sitting directly on carpet is.
Perhaps I am over thinking this.

It certainly will not give the same result as spikes in direct contact with the actual floor.Political Correctness'.........defined

Perhaps my cell pic doesn't show it that well but those 3/4" bottoms are securely attached to the luan flooring (that's not carpet) where they make for an even more secure base. That's the exact spot where those 1.2s will be spending the rest of their lives so those bases do double duty as a more secure base as well as a bit of protection for the bottoms of the 1.2s.
Yes I agree if you plop an unsecured granite base on top of a carpet and set your spiked speakers on top of it there wouldn't be anything to be gained. -
Sometimes it is preferable to NOT couple the speakers to the floor. This will depend greatly on the construction of the room and floor/ subfloor materials. All these things relate to the speed of sound through differing materials as well as resonances created by these sounds. If con is the opposite of pro, is Congress the opposite of Progress?!

I'm thinking I would at the very least be securing a couple of 4x8 sheets of 5/8 or 3/4 plywood under your rig. You could trim the edges with 1/4 round to keep it from being a tripper. Of course better yet would be to overlay the entire floor. I hate a spongy floor too and added sister joists, bridging and another layer of subflooring in my upstairs rooms.
