Saw this at AK and thought it was worth mentioning over here, too... interesting idea, actually... not necessarily just post-hipster ephemera.

Interesting idea, would like to hear those. Wonder how resistant to vibration cinder block is? Better than MDF?"Science is suppose to explain observations not dismiss them as impossible" - Norm on AA; 2.3TL's w/sonicaps/mills/jantzen inductors, Gimpod's boards, Lg Solen SDA inductors, RD-0198's, MW's dynamatted, Armaflex speaker gaskets, H-nuts, brass spikes, Cardas CCGR BP's, upgraded IC Cable, Black Hole Damping Sheet strips, interior of cabinets sealed with Loctite Power Grab, AI-1 interface with 1000VA A-L transformer

They don't seem to touch the blocks, just straight through the front and back boards.

There are gaskets on the boards that (presumably) effect a seal.
I think that a layer of some smooth mastic/plaster/polymer material applied to (e.g., trowled on to) the surfaces of the blocks that will touch the front & rear baffles would be a good idea.

Not being an engineer I can't tell if that's crazy or good? What I do recall from a LOT of top end speaker designers is all the talk about good "resonances" and materials. Totem comes to mind. The Rainmakers are, correct me, if I am wrong, only 12 lbs in weight, have very little damping material and actually RELY on internal sound not being silenced?

B&W states that their Matrix enclosures store less energy, and sounds better than concrete enclosures.

I have an addled memory that regular old concrete is kind of ringy.
I do know, e.g., that granite is a lousy material for, e.g., turntable "plinths" -- it is quite lively compared to, e.g., slate.
One of the local NE gurus has embraced an interesting and ostensibly environmetnally responsible (and not terribly expensive) engineered material called paperstone for plinthing.

I don't know whether it has any potential for use in loudspeaker enclosures, though...
