Then again I blame the members here

Thats right I blame many of you. The ones who always said welcome to the "rabbit hole" but failed to elaborate on just how deep it was :o
Reel to Reel, what am I thinking :\

If you are looking to be talked out of a reel-to-reel then good luck. Once you get the urge to buy something, you will buy it.

I used to have a nice Sony RR, and for a while used it a lot. But after a while I grew tired of it since it is even more difficult to find an individual track than a turntable. Fast forward 40 years, and I will highly recommend the Bryston BDP file player coupled with a quality DAC instead of a RR.

He, He, He, one should come up with a thread about what one has accumulated during ones tenure at Club Polk, mine could be a page long. Example for me, Amps, Preamps, Avrs, Speaker Cables good ones IC's also, Headphones, headphone Amps, Speakers lots of them, Subwoofers, 3 pair of SDA cables pin blade ones, CD Players, a all in one Blu Ray player (OPPO) speaker stands for my Crs+s CD's, Blu rays, a lot of Vinyl, Laptops, wall mount for my A3s..

The list goes on, nothing but a bunch of enablers, at Club Polk, and most of us are merely sheep trying to follow in the steps of the so called enablers. Mind you not all my purchases were made at Club Polks flea market or a Polk Dealer or Polk Audios Web site, but other places recommended by the enablers, such as Audiogon, E-Bay, craigslist, not to mention other places. Yep my A5's costed me a lot of money never should of came here and registered them, sad thing, I want more it's best I just step or should I say we should just step away from the madness to include you Oldrocker!

If it were not for the members here, I would never attempted doing some of the things I have today. My tube amps would have never been built, I would have never pursued my 1.2TL's, or any of the upgrades done to them.

This place has been a blessing in guiding me on my journey, and a curse for emptying my wallet. B)

The RT-909 and its one-way cousin (RT-901) are nice consumer decks. My only beef with 'em is the lack of 15 ips... but for home use, that's OK.

My RT-909 is in need of its three to four decade refresh... maybe I'll tackle it this winter (I didn't do it last winter, when I shoulda...).

  • I sure wouldn't have the systems I now have if not for the forum! One consists of all Polk speakers, and the other one is all higher end gear, but both were purchased with advice and guidance of members of the forum! No regrets and pretty happy with what I now own! Charles "Stellavox" King in NY did my ReVox -- Thanks for the tip; Ken doesn't do rehabs for hire does he? I have been putting off re-doing my RT-909 'cause I don't want to eff it up, even though their rehab is supposed to be (as mathematicians like to say)... straightforward ;-) RT-909 rehab info, for any interested parties, may be found at http://www.audiokarma.org/forums/showthread.php?t=93227 Rabbi Rich P. is something of a (mixed metaphor alert!) guru on tape deck restoration, too :- )

One of the silicone oil damped tape-slack taker-uppers (that being, of course, the technical term) is sticky now -- that was the last straw, so to speak, leading me to take it out of service last year.

Photo from Rabbi Rich's above-referenced thread:

    yh1jnjlbbt9t.jpg

I guess the technical term for the slack taker-uppers is "tension roller" :- P

Isnt there a tech in Manchester area that does a fair amount of work on vintage gear Mark ? Not sure of that area over there. I just used Electronics & More in Windham Me & he treated me right on getting mine running perfect. He told me he is backing away from some equipment because he is booked with band equipment. Its getting harder to find tech's probably because all this new throw away BB stuff

Yes Ken already helped with a question. Had hoped to have some additional pics of it undressed to get some pointers. On another point, talk about blaming mixed in with aging, the wife found the GX 280 for me and when I got it home she ask what are you gonna do with the other one you bid on and won? I was so excited to have my first RTR to play with, I had completely forgotten about the other one :s

^^^^ nice. That looks very clean. I had a Sony that had 2 removable speakers with 6ft speaker wires & it worked very well. It was purchased in 1967 for 278.00 if i remember correctly. That was a chunk of change back then

The Sony TC-777 was ahead of its time -- three head, three motor, solid state "prosumer" deck with solenoid controls, roughly the 1960s, modernized (stereo) equivalent of the (mono) Ampex 601 of the 1950s. No amp nor speakers built in -- but there were numerous versions in different configurations -- and Sony made them for a long, long time. They were, and still are, held in fairly high regard in some circles.

This one rather literally followed me home from a NEARC swap meet a year or so ago - bestowed upon me by one of the local hifi gurus who, I guess, thought the deck and I were a good match.

I like(d) all the Sony reel to reel decks, even the entry-level ones -- indeed, my first-ever reel to reel was a TC-352D that I bought used, ca. 1977, from a classified ad (remember those?) in the Sunday Baltimore Sun.

heh... the problem with the internet (or, more specifically, Google) is this:
One innocently searches for TC-777 photos (looking for images like those above)... buy one finds stuff like this...

    xl951xj9de3c.jpg

Seeing something like that makes me feel far closer to the mean of the Gaussian distribution than I usually feel ;- )

Now. That guy. That guy has a little "hoarding" problem ;- )
