Sounds like amps and a preamp are what you need. The used market is your friend. Hopefully the preamp outputs still work.
I'm going to get the pioneer back tomorrow and test the preamp outputs. That Emotiva xpa-5 looks mean. -
Good on the Pio.....and at $888 you just won't find that much power new anywhere else. However, If you can, listen to it and compare it to some others out there. Some don't like the signature sound....but others love them...especially the refined Gen II.
Myself, I would find a good price on something used like this B&K Ref , etc.But used is not always the answer for everyone.

B&K is way more expensive. It's just for movies so if not as picky.

Seriously ? ....but throwing a 1000 dollar receiver in the trash isn't ?
Someone here just picked up a 7 channel B&K amp for 650, add a cheap receiver with preouts, since your not picky, and your at the same price as that receiver you just had to dump.
I would at least get a 2 channel amp for the front left and right to take a considerable burden off the next receiver you get.

Well I got the SC35 back from the Pinnacle repair shop. They refunded all the repair money except the $50 diagnostic cost. Thought they were fair. However I couldn't get any audio using an external power amplifier. Tried every thing. The power amplifier only worked with RCA jacks connected directly to the DVD player, no sound connected to RCA jacks on the pioneer.
Considering the Emotiva XPA-5 and emotive umc-200 combo. Lots of power and it looks like a straight forward processer with few whistles and bells. I like that.
Any negatives with this set up? Only used for home theater.
Thanks for all your help and suggestions. -
This Emotiva combo is on sale at Amazon. Less $ than the top of the line receivers and with more watts.

whatever you do, avoid Onkyo... They have been having reliability issues... All kinds of failures... Just Google Onkyo problems...

I have an Onkyo SC5509 HT pre-amp, and I love it. It sounds fantastic. When it works.
For whatever reason, the stupid thing will sometimes shutdown, and it is random. I can turn it on to watch a movie, or listen to some music, and maybe a few hours later it will shutdown. On the other hand, I turn everything on when I get home on Friday night, and leave it on until Sunday night. Sometimes it stays on the whole time. Other times it might shutdown 2-3 times. Obviously, I can't get it fixed since it will work fine at any repair center.
Another problem it developed is the video went out on the HDMI input, while the audio is fine. Fortunately, my Oppo 103 has two HDMI out ports, so I send the video straight to the monitor, and the audio to the Onkyo.Lumin X1 file player, Westminster Labs interconnect cable

BlueFox have you tried locating a whisper fan on the Onkyo?

I LOVE my new Emotiva XPA-5! I wish I would have made this move a long time ago. If my receiver craps out, I will get the umc-200. I got the XPA-5 primarily for home theater also, and it delivers in spades.

Did you buy the Emotiva from Amazon or direct from Emotiva?
Is the warranty the same? -
If you buy it through Amazon, it is still factory direct. It is "fulfilled" through Amazon. If you notice on Amazon the actual seller is Emotiva. Either way, it was shipped at Prime speed and arrived in Perfect condition.

Ive had zero issues with my Onkyo.

It's only certain models in the Onkyo line to be concerned with. All manufacturers put out a turkey every so often so I wouldn't label a whole brand as something to be avoided.HT SYSTEM-

Two of the major issues that Onkyo had were bad caps and unreliable solder joints on BGA style chips. If you look at the history of several electronic industries rather it be computers, TV's, gaming, etc, many have issues with these components. So, its hard to say if it is engineering, manufacturing, or cost cutting....but bad components are a wide spread problem.2.2 Office Setup | LG 29UB55 21:9 UltraWide | HP Probook 630 G8 | Dell Latitude | Cabasse Stream Amp 100 | Boston Acoustics VS 240 | AUDIORAX Desk Stands | Mirage Omni S8 sub1 | Mirage Omni S8 Sub2

Myself, I would still play the used game and see how much performance I could get for the money. Nice gear like below pops up from time to time at nice prices if one keeps on alert. Use the AVR as a pre....TONS of features and both units have noted high performance and SQ. While some don't list that they will ship, many will after having a conversation with them. I've purchased a fair share of gear posted on CL out of state. One guy even posted the item on eBay while we were on the phone and I purchased it right then.

Thanks WLDock for the used examples. I have had some small bad luck with the B&K stuff. I know I could save money but I think for the price difference between used and new and warranty I will pull the trigger on the Emotiva. It's 5 channels and has few whistles and bells which I like.

Well I bought the Emotiva combo and rca wires and got it installed today. Very easy set-up with the microphone. Had a small glitch and got a Emotiva tech guy in 60 seconds on the phone. Amazing. My first impression is that the dynamic range is increased. Watched Game Of Thrones and was impressed with the surround 5.1 sound.
So far so good. Time to put the old pioneer on ebay as is.
Thanks for all your advice.

Peter, glad to hear you went with the Emotiva combo. I LOVE my XPA-5 Gen 2! What is your impression of the Pre/Pro?
-
I like the new set up and recommend it. The surround sound is much more clearly defined than the Pioneer which I now think may have other issues. I however don't like the bass response from the sub. I'm using a Cambridge Sound Works PSW-1 and slave which is close to 20 years old. The bass seems very muddy. I am trying different crossovers settings with little success. It's either muddy bass or none. Movies are much better but TV has sucky bass response.
