no audio from pioneer sc 35 help

35 would just turn off after 3 seconds. Repaired at authorized location, they replaced capacitors. Brought back home and hooked HDMI and speakers but no sound. Video is fine.

What did I do wrong? Any suggestions

My pio had a button on the front to turn the speakers off. Have you checked that?

Yes it goes SP ON or SP OFF. Does that sound right?

Yup. If it says sp on and you still have no sound, im not really sure what is going on.Unless its on mute :)

Sounds like it's back to the repair shop, though I would have a few uncomfortable words for them first.

Well thanks to Ken I now get new comments to threads.
Took receiver to shop this morning and they couldn't get any audio also. So not my fault but will wait to find out the real issue.

Well the story continues. Got a call from the repair place. Need to replace the main audio board of the pioneer SC 35 at a cost of $380. That means I'm into this repair for $550. Any suggestions to repair or not for a receiver this old and what could break next?
Any suggests for a new receiver with 5.1 and HDMI connections that's reasonably simple to set up?

Man I found an SC-65 on clearance at BB for less than that. For that kind of money, I say find another unit. The SC-1522-K and SC-1523-K are good values. Search amazon,. eBay, craigslist, etc.

They fixed the unit so that it stays on and switches the video via HDMI cables but no audio. They offered to refund all the money ($180) spent on repairing the unit less the $50 diagnostic fee if I don't want to continue. They didn't check the audio after repair.

The pioneer sc 35 is 4 years old and cost me $1000. I think it's time to get a new receiver. Any other suggestions for a 5.1 receiver with HDMI switching? I can spend $1000 but want a receiver that's straight forward to set up.

    Thanks

You might like the Onkyo TX-NR 838. Powerful, preouts, can stream wirelessly or through usb. Good reviews. I have seen it for less than 800.00 new.

All receivers are going to be roughly the same to set up. Some models in the Marantz line are plagued with problems too so do your research. The Yamaha Advantage line is pretty solid, also might look into an Anthem.

The SC-35 is an awesome receiver and you will probably be disappointed going backwards in spending $1000.00 on a new AVR unless you go used again.
I'd look for another Pioneer Elite SC model newer like the SC-65 or SC-75 unless you can find a killer deal on a SC-68 that would be a step up not to mention there are a few other benefits over the SC-35 like the Built in DAC that just rocks for USB High Rez Music and such. I got one but for $1000.00 I'm not willing to part with it for that.

I purchased the pioneer sc-35 new for $1000. I will only use this receiver for TV and movies, not music.
I'm looking at all your suggestions, thanks for your input.

Then buy a used one. There's a Pioneer sc 05 on the 'gon right now for under 6 bones. I think the older Pioneer SC receivers were built better anyway. The Marantz slim line is cheap new, as long as your not pushing big speakers.

I should add that I have 5 SDA speakers in my home theater. The big ones are in the front and Bs are used for center and rear. These are low impedance speakers and may have added to the pioneer death.

I still haven't decided what receiver to buy. One method is to look for a remote that has fewer buttons. The current SC-35 has way to many buttons that I have never used.

Using all SDA for HT has not been recommended. They are not designed for that use. Specific channel playback is the goal of HT. Even if you decide to stay with that setup, you are going to need a powerful 5 ch amp. Min 150 wpc.

I know but I have used this setup without the speaker interconnect for 10 years and love it. It can play very loud cleanly but the low impedance has me worried. When these speakers first came out there was no home theater.

    Receiver recommendations?
  • If the pre outs on your 35 still work, I would suggest getting a more powerful 5 channel amp and continue to use the 35 as a pre/pro. I just bout the Emotiva xpa-5 gen 2 factory direct but fulfilled by Amazon and did the same with my vsx-1121-k. It works and sounds great. I got it for 888.00 on the holiday sale. I think it's a great buy for 200w @ 8 ohms, and 300w @ 4 ohms ALL channels driven!

If you are not using the interconnects then no biggie. Still, a lot of drivers to power. If you are not worried about atmos or streaming, look for an older Onkyo with 130 - 140 wpc. They are a high current design able to handle lower loads. They are also much more versitile than the Pioneers.

Bass management is better. Can choose setting in 10hz increments starting at 40hz as opposed to Pio starting at 50hz then jumping to 80hz. Onk also has input volume control, which is very handy. Most prefer Audessey to MCCAC and the onk also has a phono input.

The onk will run hotter, so you need adequate ventilation. I put an axial fan on top ofmine. Plugged it in the back of the unit so it only runs when the Onk is powered on. Runs very cool even after on all day. Dont think the Pio offers outlets on the back either.

Using the pre outs is a good idea because I have the amplifiers!!!
I'll check to see if they work.

I also noticed the Onkyo had a high current design.
I have already purchase whisper fans for continuous operation in a closed closet.

Receiver on 5 sda's....you need an amp bro otherwise whatever receiver you get may succumb to the same fate as the old one.

Well it lasted 4 years and the top surface never ran hot but that doesn't mean the components inside didn't run hot. I have put whisper fans on all my other Revox equipment to prevent any possibility of over heating. I can't afford to replace them.

Sounds like amps and a preamp are what you need. The used market is your friend. Hopefully the preamp outputs still work.
