Formula 1 Pit Stop 1950 vs 2013

Being a F1Nut, Jesse more than likely has seen this!
Amazing how fast they do a pit stop now, compared to back then.

I understand that a few teams have had 2 second flat pit stops in practice not that 2.4 or .5 is any less amazing. Probably get a ticket for a rolling stop from a cop if he saw that.

I wonder if seat belts were being used in the 50s? I can imagine the drivers then suffered way more injuries than now.

  • I wonder how fast they could do it with only four guys?
  • I thought the same thing Kenneth. I guess the rules changed over the years. Also the way the wheels mounted must have changed a lot!

That's crazy how slow it was back then. You'd think knock-offs would come off easier then that. I don't think I've ever seen it take longer to change tires then it is to put in fuel.

  • That really made me laugh.
Today I had to switch a set of wheels and tires from one Honda Accord to another. (the first car has a blown engine but had new tires so we swapped the wheels and tires)
Total time involved including finding my car stands and the tools. 2 hours.
But that included a turkey sandwich and a nice cold beer. Ferrari would have fired me.

That putting it mildly, between 1950 and 1975 64 drivers died, not very good odds.

Jackie Stewart said in the documentary "Weekend of a Champion" (it's on netflix) that in a 5 year period say 1968-1973 that he had a 1 in 3 chance of surviving.
