Ebay question

So here's the deal.

I won a eBay auction on a Audioquest Cinnamon HDMI cable for 25 bucks (listing here). When looking at the listing it "appeared" to me that the shipping cost was 5 bucks (since it says "shipping") which seemed about right for a small package.

I paid via PayPal and away we go.

Fast Forward to today, I get a notice that I have a package at the US Post Office that has a postage due amount of 17.40 . So WTF %$%$LKJ@#$? is going on. I know lots of you guys do eBay a LOT more than I do.

Either:

1. I F'd up and am going to have to eat it

OR

2. The seller F'd up

If the seller F'd up what recourse if any do I have? I've never had this issue pop up and normally I deal with just forum members so this kinda thing never happens.

Any help appreciated. Just dont want to pay more than I have to unless the mistake is on my end.

    Ender,

In the past I have had similar -- though not identical -- issues with eBay purchases.

I always pay with PayPal, and I have consistently disputed all such problems through the PayPal dispute process.

PayPal has always given me a full refund, including shipping both ways.

However, as I said, I've never had a dispute identical to yours with respect to insufficient postage that I had to pay to receive the item. If you had refused to take delivery and had entered the dispute, I suspect PayPal would have fully reimbursed you.

I don't know how PayPal will deal with a claim for additional postage.

I hope you get a fair remedy.

I have yet to pick up the item as I didnt want to pay the additional postage. I had it delivered to my work address and the person from our office that picked it up brought me the invoice.

So as of yet I haven't paid for the additional postage, so I wanted to see what my options were before I did that.

So I don't know if I need to contact eBay/PayPal, etc.

I have sent the seller a message asking why I am expected to pay the additional postage out of pocket.

The listing say $5.00 shipping, period. Unless you requested, in writing via eBay's internal messaging system, some type of priority or overnight shipping, that's the sellers problem, not yours. Open a case with eBay immediately.

I did not request any such additional shipping, didnt care when it got here as long as it did.

I thought I read everything correctly on this. I will open a case up with them on lunch this afternon.

17 bucks to ship a HDMI cable ? Baloney....I just shipped your power cord for 6 bucks. Seems to me the seller is trying to make up for the lower price on the auctioned cable. Not an uncommon practice among ebayers which is another reason why I stopped using them years ago. The time and aggravation aspect isn't worth it.

Yup, I figured that was exactly what he was trying to do, and why I posted here before doing anything. The low cost was why I bought his cable in the first place, it was a good deal. He missed the fact he misspelled Cinnamon as Cinamon so his item was not noticed by a lot of folks that can spell hence the low price.

If I would have known I'd be paying another 20 for it, I would have passed on it as it wasnt as good a deal at that price IMHO.

I've sent him a memo on it, but since I am off work after today, I may just contact eBay. Problem is I kidna want him to EAT the cost of shipping and I still get the cable. His lesson learned so to speak.

Doubt thats whats gonna happen though, likely they will just tell me to refuse delivery and send it back to him. Leaves me with 30 bucks but no HDMI cable lol...

@tonyb‌, your cable showed up today as a FYI.

Anyone know eBays cust service phone number? Dont want to have to deal with automated submission crap.

I doubt that PayPal/eBay will make him "eat" the additional mailing cost.

Your best recourse, if you don't want to pay the postage, is likely to just take your refund. :\

open up a dispute plain and simple! his auction states 5.00 shipping. So did you pay with PP and already pay the shipping? If so paypal will ding him and I would leave a BIG FAT NEGATIVE for him and then state the reason why he deserved the negative. If you can show that you paid for the shipping already the PO may go back to him for the COD payment he is trying to bilk you out of...don't mess with the FED's

Thankful for once I was paranoid for no reason. Seller refunded me the additional postage.

Betting he will be more careful next time calculating shipping as I don't know if after fees postage etc he actually made ANYTHING on the cable.

But happy ending as I have the cable and didn't have to pay any extra for it.

PHENOMENAL price IMHO.... Hoping to snag a couple more when the prices are good. That and a couple Pangea powercords and my HT will be 99% done.

  • You ran into a seller that obviously didn't know how much shipping would be and shorted the weight when he printed the label so that his cost was less. He would have had to drop it into a mailbox instead of doing it at a window where they check the package weight against the prepaid label so they sent it COD. $17 is a lot of difference though.

I have had them ask me for more money for .2 ozs difference once I added the label in a protected sleeve. It pushed the weight into the next category.

  • I can't imagine a scenario where the seller benefits from you having pay the parcel service more money. I bet the seller unintended to add a priority or insurance to the package. Either that sucks.

Either way issue resolved to my satisfaction.

I suppose I should have read the entire thread. Glad you got it resolved.
