My dad scored one of these for next to nothing and i guess i get to buy it from him. My question is, how do i hook the thing up? It appears to have some older oversized inputs on the back, like a guitar/guitar amp. What do i need to do to hook up a source to this beast? The standard rca cables will not work. Pardon all my ignorance on this matter.

I also don't have any cheap speakers to test thing with. I'm not going to hook up my lsim705s to this thing. I am assuming i can hook this up with a preamp or just hook a direct source to it to test. The specs on this thing are pretty crazy. I am wondering how it will compare to my NAD 7600...
looks like i need to get some 1/4 inch to rca cables after some further research. -
I believe it's a pro amp, you may need balanced connections.HT SYSTEM-

looks like this bad boy might be more than i can handle/understand. lol.

You're going to need RCA to 1/4" adapters.
-
XLRs or 1/4" Mono for the input. Looks like it has binding posts for the speakers."Some people find it easier to be conceited rather than correct."

If that amp out-thinks you, don't post or print it here. Bad name.
It's a standard power amp, it just uses 1/4" inputs instead of RCA. -

It's actually a highly sought after pro amp. Only problem is, it weighs as much as a refrigerator.Home Theater/2 Channel:

it doesn't take much to outsmart me lately. I don't know what balanced inputs are. My bad. I'll have to google it again as the first article i read went in one ear and out the other.
edit:i think i have it figured out. Hopefully the amp makes it my way. My dad advises me that an unsavory (rough paraphrase) friend of his asked to "check it out" and he loaned it to him. I suspect he won't see it again. lol.

my main source of confusion stemmed from the mention of the need for balanced inputs when the amp has 1/4 inch input jacks. there are no xlr jacks on this unit.

XLRs are superior however

So, how will i know if i need balanced connections? Hum in the channels?

Most pro amps with TRS inputs will accept TS type plugs. This shorts the "ring" contact to the "sleeve", and allows use of unbalanced inputs. You'll need to find the manual on it, and double check. Ground Plane, and Ground Loops can be a problem.

You don't. Just get a set of cables with male RCA plugs on one end, and male 1/4" mono plugs on the other. Parts Express probably has them.

thanks for all the input (that was bad). i get the amp at thanksgiving. will report back with my findings.

Keep in mind, there were 4 or 5 revisions over the years. It will usually say Mark II, Mark III, etc.
I would also have it checked for DC at the outputs. Don't test it with a good pair of speakers either.Home Theater/2 Channel:

I've been advised that the amp has a dead channel and has been thrown in a scrap pile. bummer.

May have been for the better.
You might be right about that but I have a very good friend who happens to be a retired electronic repairman and he would have diagnosed the problem for nothing. I'm kinda bummed out. I'm hoping my dad was just pulling my chain as he likes to antagonize me from time to time. The last item he told me through out was a part from my collector car that was worth about $800 but he eventually found it. lucky me.
