? about tubes ,might be apples and oranges

I was having a talk w/ a guitarist friend of mine and we had a major disagreement. He's a Clapton freak and said he used KT-66s in his Marshall stacks and I always thought they were 88s. They did change to 88s later on to out power Hendrix. Now our side of audio I went to the McIntosh pages for giggles and 88s were their primary output tubes and 12au7s and 12ax7s for preamp stages. My question is the KT-66s interchangeable w/ home tube amps or the 88s are just more powerful and that's why are used. Another minor question why do the English call tubes valves? I guess because they also drive on the left.....

The term "valve" was originally used very widely -- the idea is that a vacuum tube acts as a valve for the flow of current (which it does).

I cannot tell you much about the "kinkless tetrodes" (KT-xx) -- I don't much care for them as hifi output tubes, personally. They are, I think, lineal descendants of the EL34, which was a beam power tube. I think that the only way to get more output power out is to increase the plate voltage... but I could easily be wrong about that.

Here's a little bit on the beam power tubes and the kinkless tetrodes...

the kt-66 tube is in the 6l6gc/5881 power tube family, it is not in the kt-88/6550 or the el34/6ca7/kt77 families.
