Thank you to all veterans, and a special thanks to all the Vietnam vets whom were not openly welcomed home, and recognized as the hero's they are.
Welcome home. The best way to predict the future is to invent it.
It is imperative that we recognize that an opinion is not a fact. -
My Grandfather Tucker served on a tank crew in WWI.
My Great Uncle Louis served in Europe in WW2.

I thought Katherine Jenkins did a wonderful rendition of this song in appreciation to all who served and made the ultimate sacrifice ,Lest We Forget. [url="http://youtu.be/BKg1vMeaY5M

I believe Veterans Day is a day to celebrate and honor the veterans who served in combat zones and came back alive. Memorial Day is the day we recognize those that made the ultimate sacrifice.
It is possible for individuals to have served 10 or 20 years, but are not veterans because they didn't serve during periods of conflict, or in areas of conflict.
I believe that's a fact Jack. -
George, actually no, you do not have to have served in an area of conflict to be a veteran. A veteran is anyone who served in the active military and was discharged with something other than a dishonorable discharge.
I am a veteran because I volunteered and served in the USAF for 4 years and was Honorably Discharged. I served during the Vietnam War era but was never in the war zone. So I am a military veteran but not a combat veteran.
I can, therefore, be an active member of the American Legion, but only a social member of the VFW, as the name implies, Veterans of Foreign Wars.
I was in hazardous situations, due to being on flight status, more than once, but do not consider myself in any way equal to those that served, and are serving, who put their lives on the line, and the welfare of others, and this country, above their own. -
I don't know about that, we're mixing up Veteran and Combat Veteran. I did not receive "Veteran's Status" until I played in a couple Gulf Wars, and a few other things downstream. Any enlistments or time served before that, they don't want to hear about. My "Veteran's Status" allows me to deduct $250 from my local taxes. Now, one of the prerequisites for that involved me digging up a piece of paper for my local township committee, stating that I was in an area of conflict (designated by the US Gov't.) at a certain time (designated by the US Gov't). My participation at that certain time, and at that certain place is what qualified me for "Veteran's Status", certainly not Combat Vet Status.
It works that way for a great many other bennies also.
You flew for 4 years, and I flew for 30. Hazardous situations don't count for vet status if it's just you against the airplane. You need to have some enemy about. -
Agreed, George. I don't qualify for many VA benefits since I wasn't injured while in the service, or didn't serve in an active combat zone.
Doesn't mean I am not a veteran, just means I don't qualify for many of the benefits. I applied a couple years ago to the VA when I lost my job, and they told me in order to qualify, I had to have been injured, served in combat, or make under $35,000 a year. I didn't fit any of those at the time, but would have if I hadn't gotten another job.
