I've never seen it as I don't care for any movies that have anything to do with WWI. I tried once to watch Pearl Harbor but couldn't get through it.
I can't get into WWI either, but both movies mentioned above are WWII dramatizations. One of them as hokey as they get (Pearl Harbor), and one that is based in reality.

The opening scene of Napoleon Dynamite original short, where he's on the school bus with two little kids and ties a string around the little army man's neck and tosses him out the bus window while the little kids howl with laughter as the army man bounces on the road while tethered by Napoleon. One little kid then turns to Napoleon and says, "Hey, Napoleon what are you doing today?" Napoleon responds: "Whatever I feel like doin', JEEZ!" Lol

If I had to pick a Kubrick film opening scene, it'd be either Full Metal Jacket or A Clockwork Orange. I've suffered through 2001 a couple of times, and will never do so again.2007 Club Polk Football Pool Champ

I'm not going to disagree with you. But as for GOScenes. 2001, regardless of the slow pacing of the rest of the movie, has one of the MOST memorable, and ICONIC, opening scenes in movie history. One that everyone REMEMBERS and stays in memory as a standard for other films. That's all I mean. Not saying I would not have CUT the rest of the film down to far less than its full length!
Even Mr. Spielberg agrees with this; not that I care for his films in general; I don't!

Heh, I was just thinking the same thing -- the alignment of sun, moon, and earth on the African plain. Not to mention the greatest cross-cut shot in the history of cinema - from thrown bone to space ship!
The opening scene of Kubrick's Dr. Strangelove (in-flight refueling, or are those planes mating?, set to the tune Try a Little Tenderness) is also classic -- one of my very favorite movies, full stop.
