I did a Google search recently for this topic and was quite surprised at some of the findings, in terms of lists. I'm interested to see what everyones take is on this. What do you think are some of the greatest opening sequences in movie history. Do you have a #1? Here are some of mine...

The Matrix (Trinity kicking tail)
Raiders of the Lost Ark (The golden idol search and find)
Jaws (the girl swimming)
Inglorious **** (Germans doing a house search)
The Godfather (man asking for justice)
Star Wars: Ep IV A New Hope (This is my #1 of all time)

Let's hear them!
No excuses!

    Saving Private Ryan
I've never seen it as I don't care for any movies that have anything to do with WWI. I tried once to watch Pearl Harbor but couldn't get through it.

Haha, he'll be here all the week!

Pumpkinman, it really is worth a viewing. Pearl Harbor was low grade trash compared to Saving Private Ryan (in my mind at least.) The only other recent WWII movie/series worth watching in my mind are the Band of Brothers and Pacific series.

My favorite, and one I will watch from time-to-time just for this scene, is Serenity where the ship is dropping out of orbit onto the planet. For whatever reason, I love that scene, and the scene in Aliens where the Marine drop-ship drops onto the planet.

I have to assume that's it's a very realistic portrayal of D-Day, so if that kind of stuff bothers you, avoid it. I watch that opening scene every Memorial Day and it really puts me in my place and makes me realize the sacrifices that others have made for this country. It's intense and graphic, but very humbling.

And to stay on topic, it gets my vote as Best Opening Scene.

We have Saving Private Ryan on DVD here I'm sure as it was a must see by the Mrs. That's the reason we bought Pearl Harbor as well. Funny I can watch WWI and movies about Veitnam but am generally turned off by WWII movies.

Very underrated film IMHO. Don't have to be familiar with the series to appreciate it either.

  • Sorry to put a damper on the Saving Private Ryan express choice, but the opening scene is the family walking through the grave markers then the transistion to the beach landing. The movie "Serpico" is one that started the flash back style of movie making and the opening scene is intense.

I agree with many of the above.

Though not one of my favorite movies, I've always been fond of the opening scene to Contact. Too bad it's not set to some really good music.

How could you guys forget Terminator 2?! I used to listen to the beginning on Laserdisc (both DPL and DD versions) all the time. The transition from the quiet voice-over to the robot foot coming down is awesome; I bet the ship flyover/crash would be a great Dolby Atmos demo (even if up-mixed).
