This is, indeed, like a good cable thread: The guy who uses 12 gauge Romex tells those of us who have tried a wide variety of cables that we're stupid, because he has all the answers without having any of the experience!

    C'est la vie! :)

PS: All in good fun. I envy guys who can drink the sludge served up at Dunkin' Donuts and celebrate it as the best coffee in the world. (Just as I envy those who are happy with MP3 files played through earbuds out of an iPod!)

PSS: The experience of drinking beans recovered from civet excrement, however, is a little too much experience for me. What ever they say, I'll take their word for it.

Had the same Keurig Platinum machine for 5+ years. We only use distilled water in it to eliminate any lime scale issues. I've heard of them dying very quickly from well water usage. We've tried numerous DIY K-cups and prefer the Ekobrew plastic ones, stainless ones can get pretty hot to handle when doing successive brews. ~ http://smile.amazon.com/Ekobrew-Refillable-Brewers-Canister-2-count/dp/B00J4C2ILO/ref=sr_1_2?s=home-garden&ie=UTF8&qid=1412718378&sr=1-2&keywords=ekobrew ~

Coffee beans are bought at our Costco from Mayorga when they do roadshows in the DC/MD/VA area. We prefer to buy "farmer friendly/fair trade" beans that are usually organic too. ~ http://www.amazon.com/s/?ie=UTF8&keywords=mayorga+coffee&tag=googhydr-20&index=aps&hvadid=33987083317&hvpos=1t1&hvexid=&hvnetw=g&hvrand=11544835833924170071&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=e&hvdev=c&ref=pd_sl_4kspcjx9ex_e

A good burr type grinder is a must, the little spinner ones are a pain, IMO. Also, the Keurig's reservoir is removable and washable, no reason for it to be allowed to fester........

I got one and like it, I like the light stuff mostly like green mountain breakfast blend, & Donut house - cinnamon roll coffee... other then that I take a thermos full of coffee from a coffee pot each morning to work.

gdb - what is a good burr grinder that you like? and which of the Mayorga do you like best?

My wife used one for years with no problems so not sure what the issue could be.

We switched over to the Tassimo system a couple months back and she likes that better, I'm not a coffee drinker. We tried the Keurig Rivo before that and liked it as well, but had a couple machines go south on us.
I own both as well and find the Keurig getting way more use. They just have more choices then Tassimo. But the Tassimo is a unique machine and really adjusts to what you put into it with the bar code system. I really enjoy the Tassimo.

Mickey, thanks for the coffee bean link and I agree the Capresso is a great burr grinder. I love Koma and the Blue Mountain but for routine I use Columbian Supremo from Costco and it' snot too bad.

I won't use a Keurig machine. They are bacteria incubators. I keep my Capresso clean and it is dry between uses. I use bleach spray cleaned every month or so.

I have to believe that if there were any truly valid concerns about health dangers, there would more than just a couple of fringe sites raising the alarm........... (sites that want to sell you something) Now.... the fecal matter that's universally found on the surfaces of soft drink dispensers in restaurants, that's what I find alarming! :o

Did I tell you about the dead mouse I find in the iced tea urn in a Taco Bell one day?

I started drinking my iced tea and noticed truly horrible smell and taste. I asked an employee about getting a replacement, and she took me over to the same urn. I persuaded her to take the lid off and see what might be inside. Bingo! We found the rotting carcass of the aforementioned dead rodent!

Would you believe the didn't even ffer to give us or meals free that night.

Sorry for the distraction from the coffee maker discussion, but I could not resist the temptation. If we knew all that goes on in food preparation THAT WE DON'T SEE, I doubt we would eat anything we didn't prepare ourselves -- maybe even grow ourselves!

Same article that I posted. I think anyone who uses a Keruig should read that and seriously think about whether the convenience is worth it. I'd rather make an 8-cup pot (in a sealed carafe) and re-heat as needed.

Funny you should mention iced tea urns, they're notorious as harbors for bacteriological activity and causing stomach distress ! Employees are too lazy to empty/clean them and the colony just continues to grow, even without a mouse starter culture ! :D

Um...a mouse didn't just get in there by itself. An employee threw it in there on purpose. Probably found as they were cleaning up after close. Also probably either thought it was funny, or wanted a relative to come in and file a lawsuit for some coinage. Either way, people are sick.

Yes, but I don't think I would have the discipline required to keep it up on a schedule that would "feed my addiction." :)
