Nice score Frank!!
Front projection is by far the best way to watch HD. Nice to see your finally getting some new eye candy. Let me know if can help you out on anything you might still need. Now that I'm finished with my crazy season I'd like to stop by sometime and check out your new rig. Say hi to the Mrs. for me.

The screen is a DIY made out of 1x3's and black-out liner. The liner was purchased from a fabric store, it's normally used to line drapes to block out light. It costs about $5.75 per linear yard and is 54" tall. The black fabric is velvet wraped around a frame made of 1x3's that is fastened to the screen. Here's a link that gives detailed instructions. -
Frank,
what are you going to do with your gear? You could buy a Salamander tripple 20 and use it as a center channel stand as well.Just a suggestion.Or better yeat relocate the gear somewhere else for a killer clean look....
Good job man.

My personal quest is to save to world of bad audio, one thread at a time. -
Yeah, what Dan said - where's the rack headed? In it's current placement, you need put some ears on it and get your mystery science theater on.
I don't know **** about overhead projectors, is the white ceiling going to be a problem with light/ reflections? Is it time for a case of Pabst, some plastic sheets and paint roller?
Also, is there any logic (formula) for placement of screen on the wall? Just curious.
Cheers,

Congrats Frank. That looks really nice.
Is this going to be a dedicated Home Theater (just movies) or are you planning to watch regular tv there too (HDTV).
How much life do you estimate getting out of the bulbs / lenses?
Although not cheap, this is an option that comes in way more affordable than a plasma screen anywhere near that size. As long as the maintenance isn't too bad over the long haul.
Looking really really good man. That's going to be awesome.

Where else....on the couch!
Looking at a few different options for a new rack, might do a flexi. The screen height is determined by a formula from the PJ manufacture, it's based on the suspension distance from the ceiling, the height of the screen, and viewing distance. It's temporary set up right now, I'll be making some adjustments as time goes by. I'm planning on a manual pulldown screen recessed in the ceiling later on in the year.
I'm going to wait on making any changes to the ceiling color until I've had some quality time with the pj.
The bulb life is supposed to be 3000 hours, that's up from 2000 for the HS10 if memory serves. We're going to use it for TV, movies, satellite, and shadow puppets.;)
We were thinking about getting a plasma screen, but $7000 for a "Cheap" 50 inch was not cheap enough. Maybe some day. -
is your screne diy or store bought? i have orders to get rid of my tv befor i can get the projector. i am going with the pany over the sony for throw distance and price less out of pocket to get into the projector.

sorry i mised that part. also why did you go 98 in and not bigger. i would have made mine alot bigger than 110. i wanted at least 125 but i would have to re design my front stage that is y i made it olny 110 or will be makeing it this week

Throw distance to the screen worked out better, I was also concerned about Screen Door Effect if I went too big.
Did you get the PM I sent ya? -

Steve,
I don't think you'd want to work where I do. My boss is a jerk!! I've been the on-call guy for 4.5 years and have only been able to take 1 weekend off! I'm serious, you can even ask my wife (she follows alot of the threads here). I've only had 2 pay raises in all that time as well! I'm not a happy camper!
BTW, I'm the boss! -
You can't beat the cost of materials. My neighbor just bought a 123" Stewart Firehawk which cost him nearly $2000. That's about what those pj's go for isn't it? I wonder if it is possible to get a sample of screen material from Stewart or some other manufacturer to do a side by side comparison. What type of fabric is the line made from?
-
$2k is more than I'd ever spend on a screen! I believe that some of the manufacturers do send out samples, but you'd have to check with them to confirm. I'm not 100% certain about the material the liner is made out of, but 1 of the components is vinyl. I'm using the white side of the liner, the other side is an off-white/ivory color. With any luck I'll replace it later with the pull-down screen.
