It seems strange that a dealer who is exiting the AV world would have so much coming out this year: new Atmos speakers by A. Jones, new Elite AVRs, and two upper model Elite Universal players that "return" to high build quality and weight status!

The Pioneer BDP-88FD MSRP $2000

and Pioneer BDP-85FD MSRP $1000

As I mention in another thread, these seem aimed directly at Oppo players as they use similar Sabre DACs, etc. and have all the New Processing upgrades, 4K, etc. And can play almost all formats from BD to SACD/DVD Audio, CD, MP3 and so on.

On paper these look quite good! Waiting for Dan's (mantis) review when they hit the market!

Pioneer has the power to do whatever they want. Not surprising at all. More surprised they did not go after Oppo a long time ago. Good for them, good for the marketplace. Pioneer ain't going no where soon!

No digital inputs is a deal breaker for a 2g player. Ya think they could have learned a lesson from Oppo by now.

Sorry Tony, but did you mean no RCA analog outputs? from the pic its shows L/R analog outputs along with the toslink and coax output and USB input. I think the LAN input would serve as the digital input as you can hardwire from your network or computer.

Looks to be built like a tank. Shortly after we got our Samsung 4K set we picked up the Samsung BD-F7500 to compliment the TV. That it does but not as impressive as the Pioneer. Some folks may tend to think a 4K DVD player will yield the same results as having a 4K set, but noot!! Yes I said Noot! I don't think the Pioneer tank would change a thing for me as far as picture quality, and when true 4K content comes to the retail world...say in 20 years...(just kidding) it will not be delivered on a disk, that's for sure!

They need to offer silver faceplates again and bring back the Urushi finish on the black versions.

When they hit the market I plan on getting my hands on one of them. I currently rock a BDP-62FD just for the simple task of Demo'ing it. It's been here 6 months or so and it's a solid player.
