No good deed shall go unpunished

I feel sorry for this kid, do a good deed, be a friend and they c r a p on him......shameful.

http://www.foxnews.com/us/2014/09/20/california-boy-gets-detention-for-sharing-school-prepared-lunch-with-another/

I'm guessing the news either got his age wrong or the school level.

Good post. In the old days (pre vanilla), this would bring a lot of people out of the wood work.

As with all these types of stories, there are two legitimate points of view. However, a 13 year old should know what can and cannot be eaten, so can easily decline the offer. Yes, detention, and even the fact this occurred, is too excessive.

You can only share your school prepared meals with the garbage. The garbage is much much more hungry than any student is (everyone knows that).

*Asked rhetorically* : Could it be that schools run by the government don't want school kids to know what being friendly (and having common sense) consists of?

No true comradery is allowed anywhere, at any time (except with inanimate objects such as the garbage can).

    Rediculous.

Taken from a recent Audioholics reply regarding "Club Polk" and Polk speakers:
"I'm yet to hear a Polk speaker that merits more than a sentence and 60 seconds discussion." :\
My response is: If you need 60 seconds to respond in one sentence, you probably should't be evaluating Polk speakers.....

Yes, and Tom Barnett, the Superintendent of the Trinity Alps Unified School District seems to express seveeral points of view:

1 ."We have a policy that prohibits students from exchanging meals."

Like anything in life, there are risks involved, but I still disagree.

    2. " Of course if students are concerned about other students not having enough to eat we would definitely want to consider that."

Well, that's nice. You'll definitely want to consider that.

    4. " but because of safety and liability we cannot allow students to actually exchange meals,"

So, after careful consideration, we canNOT allow students to actually
    exchange meals.

But at least they'll consider it. The answer will still be "NO !", but they'll consider it.

That is AWESOME fence-straddling pychobabble at its finest right there Mister !

Funny stuff ^^^^.....sad as it is, but funny.

I well known school district by me, a good school district.....does not even allow students to bring a lunch from home at all. Nope nuthin'. You are forced to buy the government required idea of what a lunch should be or starve for those hours of education.

    Yeah....they consider zip.

Our Head lunch lady Mrs Durham would of been fired we all got seconds and those that had bagged lunches still got something from the cafeteria if they wanted, and on Mac & cheese day it was all you could eat. Whats wrong with our society take me back to the 70s way of life.

What happens if you give a homeless person one of your Mcdoubles and he happens to have a food allergy reaction, he still would be happy to have a full belly right. The people that gave that boy detention need their skull crushed. :s

So what about the candy/bake sales for school groups. Girl Scout cookie sales. who monitors those sales....most contain nuts, dairy etc

The problem is society is Black and White not racially but on paper. The grey area of common sense is gone. Most may blame the lawyers, but what about the judges who let the BS pass.

Can you say "society melt down". All these instances are in the minority. The issues become issues when they are exploited by media, who is just as much a demon if not the biggest demon in society.

We all look at the school and the rules, but does anyone really think that administrators, teachers, lunch ladies don't believe in sharing? Think about this...if the kid shared, and ate something he was allergic to, had a reaction, and ended up in the hospital for a week, what would happen? Family would sue and win, and the school would pay. So whoever said, why can't we go back to when I grew up when we all got seconds, yada yada...well, it's a different time, and today, people are different. The lawsuit is the first response to anything, and individuals, groups, schools, etc. have to protect themselves.

Sometimes there are rules that are in place for the safety and protection of everyone. Society dictates these rules sometimes, even if they go against what we feel is right.

Yep, the next thing you know we won't have schools because some kid could get hit by a car on the way and the school could get sued.

I can agree people are different today. Lazy fortune seekers at the expense of someone else. People today have adopted that victim mentality and must be protected from everything life can throw at them....even words.

You yourself said the reasoning is lawsuits....well if that's the crux of the problem how about we address that problem instead of blindly accepting ? We have a problem in todays world with finding the crux of a problem and dealing with it. Instead we deflect, point fingers elsewhere, and band aid problems so that they never really are solved....only masked for a short period of time.

To me, that's not society being different. That's society being dumb as a box of rocks.

I don't understand something though. Allergies weren't a problem when I was in grade school. What suddenly happened?

I'm glad my wife homeschools. It seems like the public school system left reality years ago.

Good Point....I have scanned my memory....and all the schools that I attended when I was young...there was never one incident of anyone getting sick save the occasional kid puking on the floor of the class due to a flu bug....of course, that usually started a chain reaction.......

Lawsuits affect everything in your life, from the food you eat to the car you drive, to healthcare. The list is endless.

You don't get tort reform when the number of lawyers
doubles every 10 years. What a better world it would be if the number of engineers
    doubled every year.
