New addition to this beginners collection

Hey everyone! Long time no see! Just wanted to say that I finally found someone who was interested in my Bose 601 Series III enough to trade for something I actually wanted. That something would be a near mint Yamaha M-80! Even better is the fact it had just been completely gone over and all caps were replaced! I plan on using it with the pair of SDA-1C's i picked up a while back. What think? Did I do well? 2sthhkyodrez.jpg

Only you can judge how well you did, and only after you get the system set up and sit down for some serious listening.

I am a great fan of 1Cs, and I look forward to your posts about how you like your new combination.

I hope it works well for you.

  • Very cool. I had the m60 a couple of years ago, it was a very clean sounding amp that I really enjoyed with the monitor10s. Enjoy!

Hopefully it puts a smile of your face, welcome to the room.
  • Thanks for the warm wishes everyone. I may be just a poor engineering student right now, but trust me, I'm a budding audiophile if I do say so! I plan on completely going over the 1C's as soon as I have some excess funds. (Not for a while, college student...you know how it goes.) I'm super excited to finally get some decent power to these bad boys! I was using a Harman/Kardon 3490 integrated, and that was alright, but then I was given a pristine Adcom GFA-535. I moved the 3490 back into my bedroom and paired it with some Mint! DCM CX-27's that I found at goodwill for like ten bucks! The Adcom and 1C's were then paired with my H/K AVR-254 home theater receiver using it's 2nd zone pre-outs. All I've done with the M-80 is simply swapped it with the Adcom. Not the best as far as pre-amp is concerned, but hey, like I said, this passion of mine is expensive when you're a student!

  • Similar to what Mark said; there is a point of diminishing returns both in tangeable terms as well as personal enjoyment terms. This always depends on the individual but this can easily be one of those hobbys that you can upgrade yourself out of the enjoyment you are haveing right now so be careful. it only gets more expensive and improvements will eventually get smaller and smaller. As long as you can afford it it is an awsome hobby. Simply AWESOME! Enjoy the ride.

Nice that your M80 was refurbished as it's an older unit, stuff wears out. Never had my ears on one, but folks that have seem to like them. Congrats and post your impressions after you've spent some time with your new rig.

M-80 will bring much more than Bose 601.

Don't be deterred by comments about the costs of plunging down the "rabbit hole."

It's always your choice about when and how you take the plunge, and many of us may joke about it, but complaints about results are few and far between -- and you can get lots of DIY help on this forum.

Ha! I worded that funny. Let me rephrase; Prices seem high when you have hardly any excess money to begin with. Once i start working as a robotics integrator Ill hopefully have some real income that I can use to really get these 1C's fixed up! Ah! I'm so excited!

I figured it was a good deal. I had completely gone through the 601's and rebuilt them. So I kind of miss them, but hey, gotta power those 1C monoliths! I can also use some of the money I got selling some vintage Pioneer silver-face integrated receivers I refurbed to buy a decent Pre. Any good recommendations? Would you have any though on Yamaha Pre's (C-65 perhaps?)

Nice! Keep on trucking! We can do it! I only have one more semester for my EE degree. One more year after that for my robotics/automation degree! Gotta stay focused on the end-goal! I also know your feelings about the whole friends/family situation. Gotta keep a balance, otherwise you'll burn yourself out. But hey, when it gets stressful (as it often does) we can just take a chill and listen to some tunes.

Everything you see in the pic below was bought while pursuing my math degree and supporting a family over the last few years. If you are good with numbers and know the market well enough, its easy to consistently upgrade through trades/flips/etc. I've had about 30 pairs of speakers the last 3 years, a dozen amps, about another 8 DAC's rolled through (never bought though), and about 3 dozen different cables.

    IMG_1501.JPG

That pic is from LSAF and is not in my theater room. It also doesn't include the Epson projector that I was also able to pull the trigger on during that time.

Nice setup! I need to take a few pics of my upstairs setup as well as my theater room downstairs. I will see if I cant post a few later.

Another Yammy M-80 owner! Welcome. These are great (but underrated) amps. Old electronics, especially amps! are always in need of something, so you're ahead of the game with a refurb'd unit. I've had my M-80 mated to a pair of Polk SDA2's going on almost 30years (amp down for about 5 years before repaired). If you're driving a pair of Polks (anywhere from 4-6ohm load) do NOT hook any other speakers on channels B & C. It will help with the longevity of the unit.

    Enjoy!

You must have a 55" TV, because I have the exact same entertainment center downstairs. Your room looks very nice. I'd suggest trying to do some DIY acoustic panels in that room - its just begging for them.

Thanks for the complement! Got the entertainment center at Goodwill for 20 bucks! Cant beat that! Funny you should mention acoustic panels, I have been thinking about building some for quite a while now. Just cant figure how to get started. Any tips on material? Placement?
