When you wonder how many different life forms are out in the universe, you can not help wonder how many times has life been destroyed on other planets by Asteroids or Gama Ray burst or a super nova to close to there solar system.

  • Scary stuff. I little too close. That's just outside geostationary satellite's orbit.

Whereupon it gets catapulted 10 light years away by a giant blast of sheep f*a*r*t.

Seriously, though, sometime ago I read that in the cosmological timeframe, asteroid hits on planets occur fairly regularly. Of course, in that timeframe, the stone age was a blink of an eye away. Like everybody else of a certain age, as a kid I was totally into the space program, the moonshots etc., but now the vastness and timelessness of it all makes me much more inclined to think about the steak I want for dinner or whether I want to move my speakers an inch closer to the back wall.

Well, if we don't invest MORE in asteroid detection then there won't be any "humans" anymore. How is that for a "good use of our science" that cannot be rebutted with ridiculous arguments about economics? There's a LOT more to life and its sanctity than the profit of a few dollars, I'm afraid. And it's a shame that we've devolved to that alone-so that we're always "apologizing" for one of the basest qualities of humans--self-interested greed! Any yet? Someone "will" disagree, they always do, all I have to do is wait! lol

In the event of ELE occurring.....would detection really matter anyway? We have the detection capability now...the technology to divert the threat is another matter entirely...there is none available that I'm aware of....by the way...a beach ball sized one blew a hole 40 ft. wide on the outskirts of Managua recently...last week I believe...

Well, better detection would be a good place to start. They just picked this one up on Aug.31, and missed the one that exploded over Russia completely as they were watching a different one at the time. I don't know how far in advance we could be notified with some of them, as they deflect off of something else, or that shape of some of them make their wobbly orbits a little hard to get a handle on.

Food for thought when speaking to the greed...they already have plans in place to land on and then mine asteroids for the goodies they contain, but there isn't much more than a few theories on how to destroy/deflect one that could endanger the whole planet. Reminds me of a line from a movie ..."My precious"

In reality....it would be easier and more cost effective to set up mining operations on the moon.......
  • There are 2 distinct advantages to mining asteroids over the moon. One is the near zero gravity offered by asteroids, ships will not actually land and take off from them saving mucho fuel. The other is the precious metals on asteroids are very concentrated unlike the moon, where they are spread over a much large area and mixed with a lot of unwanted compounds.

Ok...I'm not a student on the subject...but makes sense to me...I only thought of the moon due to proximity...interesting subject though.....

    I'll take that as a shot pal...lol !

Actually we are in agreement, go figure. While greed is good...to an extent of coarse, the need to self preserve trumps anything. Self preserve our families, our culture, country, planet....our very existence as a species. Unfortunately, in every category I just mentioned, the opposite is true of the reality.

So I'm not sure what prompted that approach specifically in this thread but I'm glad you posted it anyway as I couldn't agree more.

I'm with ya all the way, there are a lot of things that can cause a ELE event, but not to plan for some of htem is stupid, some you can not do anything about.
