Huge TV's...like 60"+

I've been out of the electronics nerd game for a bit and I'm not really sure what the brands to look for are.

Pioneer doesn't make TV's anymore.
Panasonic bailed on the plasma game too
Sonys apparently aren't the bees knees anymore.

EVERYTHING I KNOW IS WRONG!

So, like, who's on top of the game anymore?

  • NooshinJohn is a great resource for consumer electronics as he is in the biz...He can also get you a great deal! You can send him a message but he will probably see this.

    I recently ordered this:

    http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00I4OBXWI/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o05_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

And it is everything I need as I wanted a big plasma that doesn't need to be a smart tv or have built in audio.

It is very nice and as I watched the Seahawk Packer game last nite... I AM READY FOR SOME FOOTBALL!
    My New Year's resolution is 3840 × 2160

Panasonic still makes nice LED's and the picture quality of LG's larger sets caught my eye the last time I was shopping...but that was awhile ago. It seems one has to stop looking at just brands and eval model to model ...year to year. You really have to get out and look at them.

Not sure what direction I will go if/when my DLP goes out. Maybe by them I can do a 60" LED for every day and have a 100"+ pulldown screen for movies?

  • Came across a 60" panasonic plasma on the clearance rack at walmart this weekend for $798 (U model). I am still kicking myself for not getting it. Not sure were your located but it was in southern Missouri.

I'm in NJ, drselect. I doubt my local WALMARTS have anything like that on clearance. I might have to wander over and take a look though.

WLDock, I've been looking around. The Sharp AQUOS series I like. But everyone tells me they are junk. But every review I read from actual owners raves about them.

I've been trying to find some new Pannys locally but it's been difficult. I haven't really been looking hard either.

Are VIZIO TVs still made in the U.S.?

I don't know what to tell you. There are still some Panasonic plasmas that can be found, often at good prices.

I'm waiting for my set to die before going new.

Frankly, I like some of the larger Sharps. How can they be that bad? They're one of the MAJOR panel manufacturers in the world! And then there was that Quattron ad with Sulu (Takei), you've gotta love that!

I'd be thinking of a 70" Sharp if you're going big--good price to size ratio. Or find an old Panny Plasma.

Vizio had some QC problems in the past. But I've heard those have been addressed? I have no idea where there current sets are put together.

I know a lot here don't care for them. But the few Samsung Plasmas I've seen have been good performers and also fairly reliable. I have a couple of friends who buy only Samsung? Don't know how many are still around.

Too many options. But do put your eyes on some of the above. I'm sure others will jump in and either support or criticize my choices above. lol

I've seen the Sony 4Ks and they are nice. But I suspect that John is NOT thinking of spending a "fortune" on a 4K TV so he can see Kevin Spacey's aging face in all it's glory! lol

    Good sets though!

cnh, I'm not replacing anything, this is going to be the "movie screen" for the basement. I'm not looking to spend a fortune right now because I don't have a fortune to spend. I don't want **** either but I realize I'm not going to be able to get the best/newest/greatest thing on the market right now.

Also, the Samsungs...they feel cheap and look cheap. Like flimsy. So does LG. I've been avoiding them. Out of the "cheap TV's" like what WALMART is carrying, the one that seems the least flimsy is the Sanyo one.

gunoyez, I've been looking at the 4K sets and it's hard to tell the difference between specifications and the price tags. They are a little out of my reach right now 'cause if I had 4K to blow on a 4K set, I'd sooner pay off my car instead.

drselect, believe me, if I stumbled past a deal like that, I'd be all over it. The 42" Panny Plasma I have in the living room was a deal like that. They opened a new HHGregg near me like 4 years ago and it was a $849 TV retail that I paid $389 for. Everybody else went for the Samsung at the same price because it was 1080i and that's a bigger number so it's better, right? But I walked in, they were running out of the Samsung and one of the sales guys asked if he could help me. I said I was there for the TV sale and he said they were running short and might have to give me a rain check. I said "On both TV's?" He said "Which one did you want?" I said "The Panasonic." He's like oh! We have plenty of those. Then the guy in front of me turns around and it's my friend's brother and he says "You're not getting the Samsung?" I was like NO WAY! It's an inferior TV! It's also only a $75 discount. The Panny is like $800-$900 retail for less than $400, so what if it's 720p? It's too small of a screen to notice a difference in resolution. He then says to the sales guy "Can I get the Panasonic instead?"

Basement? Movies? Have you considered a projector and screen? You could go much larger for about the same $. I could make recommendations on a 100" screen and projector for under $2k. The only real consideration is if you have good light control in the room.

I have 1 32" Sanyo, and 3 Vizio's of various sizes. I'd have to give Vizio the nod (slightly) on build quality, and certainly on picture quality. The Sanyo had to be taken all the way to "4" on color to calibrate properly, on a 0-50 scale. Not confidence inspiring. All are 720p LCD sets as I had no need for 1080p on these smaller screens.

billbillw, a projector would be cool but the house was built in 1956 so the basement ceiling is a tad under 7 feet tall. A projector would be in the way. Also, due to the lay out of the room (it's a looooong room, 36 feet by 13 feet), the projector would be hanging down in the center of the room. Forget taller people, my 5 foot 7 self would have to dodge that.

thsmith, that looks like a good deal. I'll have to see if I can find it locally or something comparable and take a look.

The only Sharps I like are the top AQUOS. Some of the lower line sets look odd to me.

As far as Vizio, some of the previous models are not the best in terms of picture quality..especially compared to a good Plasma, but the new models are better spec'ed with an improved picture. They are a good value when you can find them on sale.

thsmith, that looks like a good deal. I'll have to see if I can find it locally or something comparable and take a look.

There are several ways you could get around that issue. One would be to have the projector mounted just above your seating position. That way the couch or theater chairs would prevent people from walking into it. I have mine in a similar way. My ceiling is closer to 8', but the projector hangs down to somewhere between 6.5 and 7'. It actually helps if you can easily reach it to fine tune the focus, zoom, and lens shift. With my Epson, it varies somewhat, especially when the temperature changes in the winter.

The other option would be to have it sitting on a shelf behind or to the side. The optics in the modern projectors are amazing how they can throw the image to the side, up, down, etc.

Eh, then I'd have to do some fancy stuff with the ceiling and such too for the projector screen. I don't have many places to mount a shelf either that wouldn't also be in the way. The only real option I'd have in that respect is if I built a "coffee table" and mount the projector in that but then you're REALLY stuck with placement problems.

Understandable. There are definitely benefits to a more traditional flatscreen. Sharper image, better with ambient light, faster turn on, no bulbs to worry about, more inputs, etc.

I would just make sure you get the largest size you can fit/afford and try to setup your seating within the THX recommended distance. For a 60", that's something like 6'-9' away.

The room lends itself more to a flat screen than it does a projector. It's 35 feet long and a 60" screen would do well as a theater but also has a TV big enough to see from the other end of the room.

Believe me, I thought about a projector but there'd be so many compromises just to fit one that it's not really worth it.

You can include me with this group. I love my AQUOS.

The issue I had when buying is making comparisons. What you see in the store is NOT what you get when a TV is set up and calibrated (and the lighting conditions are obviously much different than home viewing). This makes comparisons very difficult.

Nonetheless, I love the PQ on mine, and the 70" sets are getting really cheap nowadays.

Yes, this is what now had me interested. Went from a 50" plasma to a 73" DLP...won't be going back to a much smaller set. I have been thinking about a 70" LED. I love my DLP but its needs maintenance due to age. Just replaced a bulb now the fans and color wheels are getting noisy

DLP? lol I'm still running an Rear Projection RGB HDTV 1080i, and waiting for it to die. But, to tell you the truth, it's color is far more accurate than most LED/LCDs and a lot closer to a good plasma!

I'm sure the DLP is similar in pic quality. I don't like the super-saturated, super-bright flat screens much. But I guess you can "calibrate" them down to less than laser brightness?

Yes, DLP looks closer to film to me. Some of the LED's I don't care so much for but want to stay with at least a 65", 70", 80". Did a comparison at the shop with a Pani plasma vs. AQUOS LED, VS. Mitsu Diamond DLP vs. Projection. With the lights dim...the 73" & 84" DLP Mitsu were bargains compared to the more expensive sets. Especially when I decided to find a used 73" one for $650 a couple of years ago! The game last night was jumping off the screen. Go Lions!
