Both albums are excellent for demo imo. (Tried hard to get Boston tix, but was not fast or lucky enough.)

gce - I recently changed out my Goldring 1012 MM with a Denon 103r on my Music Hall 5.1 and absolutely LOVE it. I can see why it's been recommended by so many for so long.

I also have a Denon DL-110 homc which is pleasingly detailed and sounded excellent when I was using a Project Tube Box (think it was a mkII with nos Mullards). But I still prefer the 103r, especially with the current pre's (PSAudio NPC and Jolida).

BTW, I did have some sort of magnetic hum issue with the DL-110 installed on my Music Hall TT that had a metal platter. I replaced it with an acrylic platter and it is very enjoyable paired with an Emotiva USP-1 preamp built-in and Parasound HCA-2200 in the game room "fun system".

    Have fun with your search!

    Craig

I'm using 1961 vintage Mullard 12AX7's in my Project Tube Box SE and it is sweet sound indeed.

I've decided to try these Mullard's Fongolio so I took the tubes out of my Project DS and there is a heat sink around the tube and its stuck on with maybe some epoxy. Do I need this heat sink on the new tube I put in and if so how do I get the heat sink off without destroying the stock tubes? I new at this...

Small signal tubes generate very little heat; heat sinks are not required. Perhaps (???) the gizmo(s) on the tube(s) are to quell vibration (which can cause "microphonic" distortions in high gain tubes like a 12AX7 or 6922).

Thanks, pretty sure these are heat sinks. They're made of aluminum with fins on them. I have put my hand on the preamp and its warm but not hot to the touch so I'm not going to worry about it.

Any 12AX7 run within its limits will only get warm and really (really) doesn't need any heat sinking. It'll also (most likely) last tens of thousands of hours, too.

Wife is out for the day so I rolled my first tubes, a matched pair of Mullard NOS ECC83 / 12AX7. I let everything warm up and put on Harvest Neil Young for the first test! All I can say is "Holy Carp" this sounds so good. The way this has improved I don't see me rolling any more tubes.

Next step is a different cartridge...Thanks for all your help guys! :)

I'm new here and this is my first post .
    I have a quick question.
I have the Pro-Ject Audio - Tube Box DS. The tubes don't stick out enough for me to get a good grip on them to pull them out. How do you guys get them out?
    Thanks for the help.

Rubber coated spark plug boot pliers? Just an idea.

That would probably work. I had a hell of a time getting mine out. I used some rubber tape, not sticky tape but I had to grip it with 4 fingers to get them out. I thinking there should be some kind of puller but I didn't find one.

    Welcome!

I wear a pair of Dyneema Polyurethane Gloves. Around $10-$35 depending on brand. They aren't too thick or thin and provide a non slip grip on the glass. AKA cut resistant gloves.

Thanks for the info. I was able to get the tubes out using kitchen gloves. But was not able to get the dampers off the tubes. I wanted to see what tubes are in it.

The tubes are ECC83 (12AX7A) and no need in re-using the heat sinks. The tubes don't really get that hot.
