Hey everyone
I'm about to purchase an Oppo. I was looking at it on Amazon, and there was a section that showed that other buyers also bought a calibration disc (Spears and Munsil) for another 30 bucks.
Is this recommended to buy this? I will have my TV calibrated at some point. Can a home theater installer just calibrate my tv and the Oppo without me having to buy a calibration disc?
Thanks.

You do not need the disk for calibration. A professional will have test equipment to do the calibration.Lumin X1 file player, Westminster Labs interconnect cable

Magico S5 MKII Mcast Rose speakers; SPOD spikes

Shunyata Sigma XLR analog ICs, Sigma speaker cables
Shunyata Sigma HC (2), Sigma Analog, Sigma Digital, Z Anaconda (3) power cables

If its an ISF Certified Calibrator he will calibrate the tv first, then connect the oppo and run a dvd to double check that the player isnt changing the signal.
I am ISF level II certified, and while calibrating a Sony xbr850b I checked the bluray after the tv was calibrated and the oppo 103 was crushing the blacks some. Slight adjustment on the brightness tab on the oppo and it was perfect.
Thats the main issue with the dvd calibration disks. They are only as good as the settings on the player. If your settings on the player are off your calibration of the tv will be off. Granted its much better then not doing anything at all.HT Rig Samsung 64F8500 |Pioneer Elite BDP-52FD|Pioneer Elite VSX-32| Two Carver TFM-15cb Bridged for mains|Polk Audio RTiA5 Cherry|Polk Audio CsiA6 Cherry|Polk Audio T-15 Heights|Polk Audio FXia6 Surround|DIY 8cuft Dayton Ultimax 15" powered with a Crown XLS1000

You can actually calibrate a set yourself. You will need an EyeOne and the software to do it.

I calibrated my plasma using that software and test pattern disc from his site. I have the DVE HD Basics and although he says it can be used, it was missing some test patterns needed to properly calibrate so I purchased the one sold on his site.
THe link Shereadp provided is actualy the odler version of the walkthrough. The updated version is located below:

Took about an hour and the end results were better than expected. The TV already had a great picture out of the box so I wasn't expecting much of an improvement.
Definitely worth it IMO if you're serious about getting the best picture quality possible without hiring a pro to come in and do it. -
I have always used DVE BluRay, and love the results.Source: Bluesound Node 2i - Preamp/DAC: Benchmark DAC2 DX - Amp: Parasound Halo A21 - Speakers: MartinLogan Motion 60XTi - Shop Rig: Yamaha A-S501 Integrated - Shop Spkrs: Elac Debut 2.0 B5.2

Best to borrow other people calibration setting from around the web. It will not be ideal but it should get you so close to a starting point of perfection that your not even gona care.

If interested, here's a link to a database of user settings:

I used the settings on that site as a starting point when calibrating my TV. As @polkfarmboy stated, it was quite close to perfect.
