Hi All I think my AVR bit the HDMI bullet last night. I was having random audio issues for few days, but last night audio stop working. This is what is going on:

a. HDMI Video works
b. No audio from any HDMI source BD and Cable Box.
c. AVR will not detect the audio source type. Meaning no switch to Dolby D or DTS when there is present.
d. HDMI Pass trough works fine.
e. Go onto setup, level calibration and there is no pink noise on any of the channels.

What I have try:

a. switch HDMI cables. No luck
b. Factory reset. No luck

I will try today running some RCA cables from the BD and Cable Box and see if any audio comes out. Any recommendations welcome.

I guess is time to go back to a Pio Elite....:')

Onkyo is like the GM of Audio. For a few dollars they could've put higher heat resistant transistors, etc. in that HDMI board. But guess what, they chose not to. As a result, over time, most boards fail. The FIX is actually NOT that expensive (if you can do it yourself), there are a couple of youtube videos that show you how if you have those skills (what to replace).

Onkyos are great AVRs, but that HDMI problem has only been addressed, I believe, fairly recently! My 805 was bought off the Onkyo site as a "refurb". I suspect, since it's boards have not yet failed, that the HDMI problem may have been addressed when the unit was refurbed?

Okay so I also try with a pair of RCA cables and I dont get any sound from any source.

I guess will move the VSX-30 from my bedroom to use it for now. Will have to take out the SDA's and the RTI12's as the VSX-30 will not really work with them as it does not have pre-outs. Plan to use the Usher's bookies as main speakers until get the Onkyo fix or get a new AVR.

    Cheers

My TX-NR905 is exhibiting the exact same problem last night. HDMI video works but no audio from any input, CD, DVD, tuner whatever... Onkyo really sucks.

Check the firmware versions, if some don't show up then its the probably the BGA chip that is so common.

Was able to reflow the one in my unit and that fixed it. Adding a heatsink and exhaust fan will help. The amount of heat in that part of the unit is so much greater than what is coming from the amp stage. Suprised that that was not addressed with earlier models. It really sucks!

But, for me I'm a tech and can repair the units if they go out. The 3008 and 5008 that I have both had issues when I got them.

I think your going to do this but here's what I do intentially. When I 1st got my Yamaha rx-v665 avr, tv, and cords I thought the HDMI cable was the be all end all cable to do what I wanted. I watch silent tv like a ball game and listen to tunes either dock,i-pod, fm ect. As most know you can't do that w/ just a HDMI cable so I ran either an optical and now better RCAs out of my cable box into audio 1 of the avr and I have the best of both worlds. If there was any degradation of sound I never heard it. I'm sure your Onkyo has an audio input and is worth a try instead of kicking it to the curb or sending it out to be fixed. If no audio in by any other way then it's probably a gonner.

Before I bought my TX-NR 838 I spoke with someone at Onkyo voicing my concerns of HDMI board failure, guy told me these issues have been taking care of, but I bought The 5 year geek squad warranty from best buy for my 4k Sony that also covers my Onkyo I bought from magnolia so I feel good about it but my Onkyo feels warm to the touch but no warmer than my Dennon or Yamaha ran. I have a 3 channel Adcom running the fronts and after hours of running them they are only warm. I hope you get your Onkyo working again.

Hi all thanks for the reply's

I try other connections today and sources to no luck (RCA and optical). So the AVR is out and the Pio VSX-30 is taking the HT work until either I talk to Onkyo and see if I can get an out of warranty fix or get a new AVR looking into Marantz, Pioneer or Yamaha.

    Cheers

You may want to consider a Sony ES . I have a ES 5300,now six years old solid, runs cool. It is 4ohm stable ( I have an Emotiva XPA5 so in my case that feature does not really matter.) Terrific build quality, it comes in at 39 pounds so it has some heft within it. Good luck.

Well I reach out to Onkyo parts and service department yesterday by email. I got a reply back today. They will go ahead and repair the unit at no cost even know is out of waranty. They will even cover shipping cost....nice....:')
  • Excellent! Glad to hear it. I had a 705 a few years back that had some issues, but couldn't get Onkyo to fix it for me. I now have had the 717 for a couple years, no issues so far.

Now there is a lot that bird don't know, but it don't change the fact that the world is happening to him all the same.
