Well, I guess third time is a charm. The M1.0 I've had for several years now gave up the ghost, I think. No more Carver for me!

After thouroughly determining that the TFM-42 I just bought has a dead left (GRRRRRRRR), I decided to hook my M1.0 back up. When I flipped the power switch, I got an audible buzz in the left channel. No biggie, I thought, as the M1.0's can be a little noisy during power-up and shut down. Then, a few seconds later (like 5 sec) I got the feedback from hell from both channels and the LED's on the front pegged to green (no headroom). I quickly flipped the amp off.

Here's my question: Is it possible I damaged my RT55i's during this episode?

Did you have the TFM-42 hooked to the speakers before your m1.0 episode? Your feedback was more likely DC voltage dumped into your speakers. The most common effect of output transisitors shorting. Take the grills off your speakers and with your finges on either side of the cone dust cover push the cone in and out slowly. It should move free and easy. Make sure to keep equal pressure on the cone when doing this, as the clearance tolerances are very small. If you feel a rubbing, you have overheated the voicecoils. Not likely as they only saw the current for a short period of time, but possible. Another possibility would be an open voice coil, meaning no sound when hooked up.

Yeah, I did. I was tryin gto be super sure that the TFM-42 was dead on the left and swapped to speaks to eliminate a variable. At least I didn't do this to the SDA's!

I'll check the freedom of movement of the cones this evening. Thanks.

Have a receomendation for a new(er) amp? I made a list in the electronics section but will take suggestions anywhere.

Is it possible the switch to bridge the 1.0 to mono was (is) engaged?

Nah. It takes some effort to swap, like removing two screws.
