Looking at a pair of CRS + with Sanus stands and IC (claimed late 80's), but don't know what a good price is. Have yet to see them in person, but they look very good in pics. Did a search here but came up empty on pricing. He's asking $300.

Pricing seems fair to me, but would like to hear what the general range is.

I sold that same set up for 450.00 so 300 sounds like a great number.

Price is good if they are pin/blade. A little high if they are early CRS+ blade/blade, since there is less upgrade path.

This would be important, no doubt. I'll have to go look/listen, but I'm guessing they're pin blade as the cabinets appear in the pics to be real wood, which I think was only available on the latest models.

They're single tweeter, which identifies them as Plus.

My rule with stuff like this is location and condition drive price. Within reason, I'll pay well over "market" for an item if it is local so:

    1) I don't have to ship it - especially Polks since them don't ship well
    2) I can inspect them in person - My definition of "mint" might be very different then a guy selling them on ebay
    3) I can test them - Money in the bank for me to actually make sure the work possibly

In Canada, back in 1986, I was more then willing to spend $1200 (1986 dollars) to buy these. So would I spend $300 today for them? Sure.

I got fooled on a CRS+ single tweeter purchase as they didn't photograph the rear of the speakers, and once they arrived I realized that they were blade/blade models with 6503 drivers all around. No chance for 4.1TL modification on this model. Consider it a transitional model.

Actually, the 3rd generation 2As and CRS+s can be TL'd, and will benefit greatly by changing the sub-bass drive inductors. The crossover itself is more expensive to upgrade due to the large electrolytics in the sub-bass drive circuit.

Don't drivers require 6510/6511 components? I've been basically told that I couldn't get there from here, that any upgrade with the exception of full gutting and 100% replacement wasn't a true 4.1TL.

    How many generations are there?

Not true. If you look at the schematics for the 86 CRS+, and the 87-89 CRS+, the Hi-Pass circuits are identical except for a single 2.7 ohm resistor in the shunt. This resistor balances the output of the tweeter in relation to the woofers. The 3rd generation 2As and CRS+s use identical drivers for the stereo and dimensional circuits. The 4th generation 87-89 use either a 6503 or 6510, for the stereo driver, and a 6511 for the dimensional side. The output of the combined woofers is slightly different than the 3rd generation.

Thanks for clearing that up for me. I will contact you when I get ready to upgrade them. I do have an extra set of Gimpod boards too.

There are three, 2nd generation with two tweeters, 3rd generation with a single tweeter, and 4th generation with a single tweeter. The 5th generation never materialized because Polk ceased production of SDAs. The 4.1 would have been the 5th generation CRS+

Dennis, the Gimpod boards are not compatible with 3rd generation SDAs. The 3rd generation has a split crossover, 4th and 5th generation SDAs used the single, common board.

    $300 is good price.

Around here, they don't seem to bring too much though.
I sold my pair for $225 after posting for 2 months.

WMG, can you describe the differences between the 3rd and 4th generations?

Any external visual differences I should look for?

The cabinet, and front panel will look identical.
On the rear, the 3rd generation will have a blade/blade connector off to the side of the binding post cup. The 4th generation will have the pin/blade connector mounted in the binding post cup towards the top, and there may or may not be a plastic plug sealing the hole where the blade/blade connector would have been.

If they're pin/blade and in good shape, go for it. You could mod those babies all out.
Good music, a good source, and good power can make SDA's sing. Tubes make them dance.

Definitely! I followed your and Tool Fan's mod threads so I have a guide

The thing is, I don't have a use for them right now. Thinking about the future and possibly downsizing though.

Well, Neil, would you happen to know of anyone who has done any significant mods/upgrades to a pair of CRS+s and just what that endeavor might entail?

    Heh, heh! ;-)
