I have not set my receiver up yet. Should I get a separate sub though, will this ease the workload on the tower speakers and produce better sound?

Yes, it would. However, you need to read the manual to the receiver and set it up correctly. If you want good sound anyway. Todays receivers are not plug and play like older receivers, you need to set them up and read the manual so you know what everything does and how to tailor the sound.

I agree. It is a "must".
Took me about a week to understand my
Sc1222. That darn MCACC is a bit tricky :/
That way you are ready to adjust on the fly and like Tony said "tailor the sound"
    Cheers!

Edit- always a good idea to download the pdf (from manufacturer website) to your phone.
That way wherever you are, you can study (so to speak).
