Monitor 5 vs 5 jr

Been trying to dig up some info on the differences between the Monitor 5 and the 5 jr, but I've had little luck. I know the basics (early 5jr had a port, later ones had 6.5 inch passive vs 8 inch passive on the regular 5, etc), but I am curious to know how they compare sound wise. I'd imagine the regular 5's had more bass, but did the jr make up for it with tighter bass? One clearer then the other, for instance?

Any help would be appreciated!

For me the 5 JR's with port sounded more like monitor 4's.
Overall sound was lacking bass. They were brighter and really could use a sub while the 5's had a better blend of bass with high frequencies.
But none of them have upgraded crossover so that may change how they sound and didn't try too many placements.

I have the 5jrs series 2 with the 2500 tweeter. They sound good to me, but you aren't going to get booming bass from them. They are good for what they are though and do great in a smaller room. In a larger room, you just aren't going to get power to get deep bass. I can't comment on the 5s though. I would figure that they would produce better bass as you have suggested. I love my 5jrs. I got them in college and they are what brought me to this site a few years ago and got me into SDAs.

All the 5s crossover at about the same frequency, although the slopes are a bit different between them
The 5A/5B with 8" PRs will have usable output to the mid/lower 40s, the 5jr+ upper 40s, and the 5jr around 50Hz. the ported jr, might have a little punch right before the cutoff to make up for the lack of deep bass.
All would benefit from a good sub, but would also be fine for an office, bedroom, or as surrounds.

  • Try running a set of 5jr+ and and a set of 5's together. they sound better than set of 7's by alone
