Water heater question....

My bunkhouse has an electric water heater, I think about a 20 gallon or so. If I use this heater rarely, should I leave it empty---and then refill and turn on when visitors will be in the bunkhouse? Currently I leave it full, but turned off, and the water of course gets to smelling bad.

Not a bad Idea to drain it. The anode rod is being eaten away needlessly.

If you can afford it you'd probably be served better by an "on demand" electrical heating unit with a dedicated circuit for it. Heats water as needed, no real tank--I believe. They were ubiquitous in China when I was there.

Sure the electrical costs are high. But only when used so if you use it sparingly, that shouldn't be a problem.

It only gets used about 1 week a year, so no big deal.

Definitely drain it, or else you risk getting Legionella. Not to mention that water that stagnant for that long is absolutely disgusting, there's so many bad things about it that it's not even worth making a list.

    I concur with Cnh,
I am a maintenance tech for for a property investment/management company and deal with things like this on a daily basis(would rather do something else lol
But just drain. Flush tank for about 5-10 minutes.
I work on people's water heater's a lot especially snowbirds.
And have to flush 3/5 heaters as well as need to change the elements
Due to them getting so bad that it is almost impossible to pull them out when changing them.
    Hope this helps.
