HDMI questions

Hi, i'm looking into a new display and it has 2 HDMI inputs. The DVD player also has one HDMI output. Since there's no receiver or preamps out there with either DVI or HDMI output how can I use the speakers instead of the TV speakers when I want to watch movies? I went to my local GoodGuy's store and sales rep told me that HDMI is backwards compatible with DVIs, but that doesnt really help me much since my display and dvd player has HDMI not DVI. He also told me that I can just hook up the DVD player with the display thru HDMI connection. And use either the digital coax or the digital optics from the DVD player to the preamp. That doesnt sound quite right to me, because HDMI carries up to 8 channels of audio, and if HDMI is hooked up how can the sound go thru the digtal coax or the optics? And if it does wouldnt there be some kinda of signal degradation thru it? As of current availibity issues, am I better off finding a display that has DVI instead of HDMI?

    Problem solved, that will be the best way to hook it up with that gear. The digital coax and optical connection can communicate 8 channels of audio if the source is encode in the proper format(7.1)

    home theater audio gear is usually slightly behind the times and hasn't caught up to TV's yet. I'm sure within in the next year or two we'll begin seeing receivers/preamps with DVI and HDMI as well.

    face it dude.. you're just way to far ahead of the game for it too all work the way you want it to. ;)

    but yeah you want to take either a otpical or coax digital cable from your DVD player to your preamp/receiver for DD and DTS multichannel sound.

    Theres alot more supprot for DVI over HDNI right now,due to the fact HDMI is newer.Pioneer Elite and Panasonic are doing HDMI.I would like to see a standard in the near future.

    DVI has compatibility issues.

    As far as audio goes,your question is already answered.

    I suume your buying Pioneer or Panasonic correct?

    From what i've heard and read HDMI will probably end up being the future not dvi, however as a previous post said you are just ahead of your time, in the next 6 months to a year there will be more support for HDMI from what i've heard, but right now you may have to go with what works until then.
