Finally took the 12's apart and began the re-veneer project. Took several days to patch, sand and prime all of the dings and nicks. Applied heavy figured cherry veneer. Am quite pleased with the finished product. I have to decide on stain color and make new risers for the base out of solid cherry. Hopefully have that completed today.

Nice - wan'na do mine
I've never veneered anything, but I'm wondering how do you bend/adhere the veneer to radiused edges like the ones on the bottom front of the 12C's?"Science is suppose to explain observations not dismiss them as impossible" - Norm on AA; 2.3TL's w/sonicaps/mills/jantzen inductors, Gimpod's boards, Lg Solen SDA inductors, RD-0198's, MW's dynamatted, Armaflex speaker gaskets, H-nuts, brass spikes, Cardas CCGR BP's, upgraded IC Cable, Black Hole Damping Sheet strips, interior of cabinets sealed with Loctite Power Grab, AI-1 interface with 1000VA A-L transformer -
Cherry is my favorite wood to work with. Very nice indeed.

Nice work, the vodka must have helped!

Great Work. I have a pair of 12c's that I am thinking about doing as well. I am torn between just building new boxes using MDF and Oak veneer plywood or taking this route. Opinions?Main-Carver TFM35(2),Carver C11 ,Carver SD/A 360 CD,Carver TX11 ,Grace Digital Tuner, Pioneer PL707 TT,Polk SDA1C

I bought a 4 x 8 sheet with PSA (pressure sensitive adhesive backing) from www.veneersupplies.com. This is my second project with that type of veneer and it is actually pretty easy to work with. Cut the pieces approx an inch large than you need and apply it to a CLEAN surface. I then used an inexpensive razor knife with the snap off blade. After a few trimming cuts I just snap the tip off and have another sharp tip. Used 120 grit sand paper to finish the edge so it is flush. Some of the larger panels take an extra set of hand to line up the piece before it is put in place. ( My wife asked me what I wanted to do on Fathers Day so I told her I wanted her to help me apply some veneer) Once the piece is set down, it is there to stay. No adjusting or re-positioning. The wood veneer website actually has quite a bit of info and veneering tips and help. In my opinion making new cabinets is unnecessary unless they are in real bad shape. The bottom of one of my cabinets was in pretty rough shape but I got is square and straight again. The curved trim pieces on the bottom of the 12's is held in place with 2 wood screws from the inside. They were covered with hot glue, which I removed with a sharp wood chisel. Once the pieces where removed the vinyl wood grain paper peeled off rather easilly. A little sanding and I applied a few coats of clear lacquer to seal the wood in preparation of the veneer. The veneer is very flexible and it was no problem to apply it over the curved edges. -
Very nice Bruce! On my 2As, I eliminated the base, and used Large Spikes, which brought them to the correct height.

Nice work,the cherry looks nice.

Thanks everyone. Dave, what height did you bring them up to? The original bases on mine are 1 1/2 inches tall. I am going to increase it to 1 3/4 inches.

^ Those things look like they would work well for the United Arab Emirates police force as spike strips. About as flashy as a Ferrari police car.
