This was part of the pile of electronics i picked up from my sisters friend.

Some to sell, some to give to charitys, or keep if they are worth fooling with.

I know these sold for 1000 bucks a long time ago.

Like back when bob carver had a head full of hair.

I have to pick up a big plastic bin full of remotes next time i go by her place, hopefully the remote for this is in there, as apparently you have to operate most functions only by the remote.

Bob was wearing rugs as early as 1978 as far as I can tell, and not very good ones.

The DSPA1 is a badass receiver. It sounds wonderful. I suggest test driving it.

I'm currently still using my DSP-A1.. It's a solid piece of gear.. I have my Oppo player hooked up to the analog pre in jacks and it sounds great to this day.. I've considered purchasing an amp but not sure I'd actually hear a big improvement.. Keep in mind it doesn't have a tuner.. It's an integrated amp.. And this piece did not cost $1000.. I paid $2,500 for this "Masterpiece"..

    Just some clarification here:
The DSP-a1 was a badass receiver and is still respectable if you've got no use for HDMI or HD video switching.
The DSP-1 was a badass surround sound processor in 1985 and completely outdated at this point. You would be better off with the pre-outs from just about any HT receiver made in the last 15 years.

The only thing you clarified was that your facts are all wrong..

It's not a receiver (like I stated above) and it came out in 1998 (like the review states) not 1985.. And the whole point of using the 5.1 pre outs is to prevent your gear from being outdated.. You can hook up external amps and external processors or in this case, the Oppo Blu-ray which does the processing.. HDMI goes straight to the tv and audio goes straight to the Yamaha.. The Yamaha piece is not an average piece of gear.. It was the flagship and one of the best (if not the best) integrated amp at that time.. Read the review above..

And it's not outdated if I'm using it..

Sorry, the DSP-A1 is an "integrated". That in no way was my point. The original poster was asking about the DSP-1, WHICH IS NOT THE SAME THING AS THE DSP-A1.

So, please re-read my post understanding that there are two different pieces of gear involved, only one of which sucks in this day and age.
