These were in such excellent shape so I broke down and bought them, had to give a couple c notes but hadn't seen any in this good of condition and he had me Hook-line n sinker from the moment I saw them, just could not resist. they sound even better and I had them in a really bad spot but they still floored me with their sound. I know everyone would say to recap them but dang they sound awesome as they are.
In the end, I may let a friend at work have them as he has always wanted some vintage Polk's since he saw those Mathew Polk adds years ago. but they more I listen to them the more I may never let them go. I'm already making plans for some stands to put them on.

Look like my 10'bs I got new back in 84....never got rid of them...anyone who hears em asks what kind of speakers they are...they rock the joint literally...superb on lower sound pressure levels too...hang on to them...

They sure are purdy. Did they come with grills and are they in as good a shape as the speakers ? The pair I just picked up are sort of like me a little rough around the edges. I cant complain though as they only cost me 75 and they sound like a million bucks. I would have paid more but I could not find any local that were not beat up and expensive.
-
The grills are in mint condition! Maybe they had just been cleaned up, but I only saw a few hair's on them and they look new. but I also could not find anything else out there I could get to the wasn't looking really rough and I almost bought a few. these really do look better then my RTia7's grills. I don't know how anyone keep these heavy suckers in this shape for so long.2 ch- Polk CRS+ * Vincent SA-31MK Preamp * Vincent Sp-331 Amp * Marantz SA8005 SACD * Project Xperience Classic TT * Sumiko Blue Point #2 MC cartridge

Yeah thats what sold me on mine. The edges and corners were in good shape and they were complete all the way down to the peerless tweeters. I was also happy they are square edged on the front instead of beveled and the logo mounted on the case instead of the grill. My grills leave alot to be desired. One needs a recover and the other needs a burial.

They are the ones that got me into Polk audio. They are my first experience with higher quality audio. My Uncle purchased them brand new and we sat and listened to them for hours and I couldn't believe how real they sounded. I was hooked ever since.
He still has them in his basement. I might have to go over there and borrow them for a very long time .
Love em.Dan
My personal quest is to save to world of bad audio, one thread at a time. -
It isn't hard to recover them as long as the frame is in good shape... I have seen some that looked like they were left out in the rain. I will probably recover my 5 b's for the second time since the 80's ...My New Year's resolution is 3840 × 2160

Those do look clean. Very nice find. May i ask what you are hooking them to ?..

I've had them hooked to my Vincent Pre-amp & amp using the SACD player, haven't tried vinyl yet, And I've hooked them to my Peachtree Decco65 & NAD CD player. though I going to relocate them to my Day room as there way to big for my 2 channel room/setup.
Then I will be looking something to feed them though I'm not sure what, so any suggestion were be great!2 ch- Polk CRS+ * Vincent SA-31MK Preamp * Vincent Sp-331 Amp * Marantz SA8005 SACD * Project Xperience Classic TT * Sumiko Blue Point #2 MC cartridge

I would love to get my hands on a set of these one day. I've heard the Monitor 4's, and own the 5's and 7's but have never heard the 10's. A set popped up on Craigslist less than a mile away for $100 a while back but I missed them by about 10 minutes.Display: Sony 42" LCD
Sources: Harman Kardon DVD-27,
Panasonic DMP-BDT110 blu ray player
AVR: Sony STR-DA2400ES
Amps: Sonance Sonamp 260(fronts),
Kenwood KM-894(surrounds)

Surrounds: NHT Super One
Subwoofer: SVS PB10-ISD -
I dragged my 2 channel equipment into the front room and push my RTI A7's aside so I could give a good listen to the Monitor 10's before I started doing the mod work. found some cheap stands that almost work for them (going to have to change the stands just a little) Was very happy with their sound so far! still not sure what I'll power them with in the future. And the only cables I had that wasn't bi-wired was my cheap home made stuff I dug out of a box. gonna have to call DOUG for more then just a clean RUG! Nice 10s,I have a set in my shop with peerless tweeters that are staying for a long while, along with two sets of 7s with peerless tweets.I love the vintage Polks.
Enjoy.
Dan -
The 10's are nice speakers, but they are a flawed design from the get go.
How so?Polk sold a boat load of flawed speakers? -
Don't the SDAs do the same? How is that a bad thing?
Not poking at ya,trying to learn here.
Dan -
In the 10s with side by side drivers at the same frequencies, how is that flawed?Bloating? The fact that they do play the same frequencies is that not a good thing?
Dan
Hey Volts sorry to sidetrack your thread. -
Thanks,Ill check it out.

Exactly, but you'll never forgot what it was about Polk that did hook you in the first place. I almost snagged a pair of 10's in mint shape right before I decided it was the SDA route I wanted to check out first. Enjoy them 10's..they look perfect!!"if it's not fun, it's not worth it & remember folks, "It's All About The Music"!!

I have read talk about the MTM orientation problem before, with the tweeter in the center of the mtm bookies, but had not thought of it having a effect in the speakers like the 10's.
Of course it would not keep me away from them even if I heard of such a thing before I bought them, and now that I've had a good listen to them before I do a mod I know they are keepers for me, they will not be my main speakers, but my indulgent speakers2 ch- Polk CRS+ * Vincent SA-31MK Preamp * Vincent Sp-331 Amp * Marantz SA8005 SACD * Project Xperience Classic TT * Sumiko Blue Point #2 MC cartridge

westmassguy (Dave) is helping me with my mod's, hes doing the crossover's and helping me with the other stuff I can do like hurricane nuts, blackhole 5, Dynamat xtreme ect... and plans for making some stands
Had a little free time today so I got 1 speaker done with the dynamat xtreme & locktite the magnets. and I will have some SL2000 tweeters freed up soon. gonna put in some RDO-198-1's
When I opened open the speaker the Dacron was all over in side even behind the PR's. its look overstuffed.2 ch- Polk CRS+ * Vincent SA-31MK Preamp * Vincent Sp-331 Amp * Marantz SA8005 SACD * Project Xperience Classic TT * Sumiko Blue Point #2 MC cartridge

Listen to westmassguy's advise and instructions and your 10's will be singing again.Roll up the dacron and staple it up behind the 6.5 drivers. Still have my 10's from 1979, with the crossovers rebuilt ( by westmassguy, but he did not provide any chopped liver) and all the other mods and though they are not SDA's or such, they still have there place and sound great. Once they burn in you will be pleased.

I hear ya Faustin
I just order my tweeters today from polk and a funny thing happened, I was put on hold and the music starts playing & I hear a phone ringing and the singer starts singing HELLO? HOW ARE YOU? etc... and I realized its "Telephone Line" from ELO

Not to bump this too far off topic, but I am (maybe foolishly) considering some Monitor 10s I have found locally for HT and some music, but from a receiver. Some background: main stereo listening right now is RTA12s connected to a Sony STR-GX9ES, which is also connected to my PC via a external DAC. I really dig the sound, I could listen to this combination all day. Right now for HT I am using just two RTi6s that I found cheaply locally and a PSW110 sub connected to a Tascam PA-R200, which is internally an Integra DTR 30.4 (picked it because it has full 7.2 preouts and was dirt cheap). Initially I planned on getting more modern towers to match the RTi6s I already have, but these Monitors showed up in the same price range (about 2 bills). I do play music frequently over the network to the HT system if I am doing dishes or any other housework, so music is definitely important from this system, but I know with a AV receiver, I shouldn't set my music expectations too high.
edit: I should add, from what I can tell, I think these are original series, and have a peerless tweeter, or at least a tweeter that appears identical to the one on my RTA12s, black with the wires sloping "down".
So, on to the questions:
-Am I foolish for considering Monitor 10s for HT and essentially my "daily driver" speakers? Would I be better off with more modern RTi towers to match my RTi6s, or will any Polk be "close enough" to use the RTis as surrounds? Would the Monitors be a significant of an upgrade over the lowly bookshelves I am using now?
-Are these more likely to be 8 ohm or 6 ohm. My receiver says 6 ohm is fine, but I know these old Polks can dip pretty low. I do have a Kenwood integrated amplifier sitting in a closet I could also conceivably use, but it's kind of an unknown quantity.
-They don't have stands with them. I plan on making stands next weekend, but if I wanted to use them in the mean time (after gluing the speaker magnets, I'm assuming these are candidates for magnet shift as well) would I be better off with them on the floor, or the ~16" MDF tables I have the RTis sitting on. My couch is pretty low, so I have a feeling it will put the tweeter above ear level, but on the floor, I have a feeling it will be very low.
Hopefully I didn't derail anything too bad, just wasn't sure it was worth starting a new thread. -
