Am I alone, on new curved TV front?

I just don't get how this is going to make my viewing more pleasurable when most of my current viewing on the family TV is not from the sweet spot anyway. I understand the thinking of the makers, wanting everyone to trade their TVs every 2 years and 3D didn't make that happen like they thought it would, so lets make it curved. Great idea! Lets tell everyone that bought the thinnest flattest TV so that it looks like a picture on a wall that a curved TV on a flat wall is going to look better!
From my perspective, a 55-65 inch TV isn't much like a theater experience in the first place. My 108 inch diagonal PJ screen serves that purpose quite well thank you. Why would I want to put a curved TV in my living room that is mostly viewed from off angle seating for conversational reasons. This seems like a throw back to the 1980s projection Mitsu-Pioneer days when only 1 or 2 got to really see the action on game day at the friends house. I usually sat back and watched it more clearly on the CRT in the corner.
Rant mode off, just asking if I am the only one thinking this way.

I am with you Dennis.
If we were talking 130inch PJ screen, I would be singing a different tune but my 65" LED...yeah...not so much."Some people find it easier to be conceited rather than correct."

I agree, and don't really like the curve screens at all.

I like them, I went and checked them out, I'm not shopping for a new TV at the moment so I will not be buying one but me and the wife loved it for that reason, when you sit off the sweet spot as you call it it gives you the feeling you are seeing it from the sweet spot..
But my Plasmas are not going anywhere anytime soon.. -
Don't get me wrong, I am a TV fiend and Tivo way more shows, and sporting events than my fat *ss should ever watch, but I just don't get the thinking behind this move and am afraid that vacating the flat screen all together is a huge mistake. Worse than giving up on plasma.
I think curved on a stand/cabinet isn't too bad, but mounting it on a wall is odd for me.HT Optoma HD25 LV on 80" DIY Screen, Anthem MRX 300 Receiver, Pioneer Elite BDP 51FD Polk CS350LS, Polk SDA1C, Polk FX300, Polk RT55, Dual EBS Adire Shiva 320watt tuned to 17hz, ICs-DIY Twisted Prs, Speaker-Raymond Cable

I also agree on the wall mounting..
I see where this is gimmicky just as 3D but I did enjoy viewing the curve TV at BB, I have also enjoyed a few 3D movies on my LED TV, I just get tired of wearing the glasses.. -

Amounts to throwing crap against a wall to see what sticks. Curved TV's are only cool and engaging on a huge projector screen, anything less is useless.HT SYSTEM-

Well if it wasn't for them trying new things we could still be watching our movies on an old Zenith, and VHS player. Flat TV's, and projectors, BluRay could only be things we dream about..

I meant that as the industry grasping for straws. An industry on a steep decline no less. People have less disposable income these days, so their answer....come out with something really cool, useless, and costs lots of what people are already lacking.... money. Yeah, sounds like a plan to me.
The industry thrives on getting people to upgrade gear every few years....only that model isn't working out so well anymore for reasons I already stated. Think they'd adjust that model....nope, they continue swirling around the drain.HT SYSTEM-

Thanks for the graph, but that has to be the hardest to understand axis graph I have ever seen......maybe I need to see it on a curved 4K screen to get it.HT Optoma HD25 LV on 80" DIY Screen, Anthem MRX 300 Receiver, Pioneer Elite BDP 51FD Polk CS350LS, Polk SDA1C, Polk FX300, Polk RT55, Dual EBS Adire Shiva 320watt tuned to 17hz, ICs-DIY Twisted Prs, Speaker-Raymond Cable

This is the problem I have with suggested viewing distances for TV's. If you've got your TV set up for a home theater and have your front speakers away from the wall, like most people suggest, you are now too close to the speakers. I remember reading in one of the threads that you should have a minimum of eight feet between your ears and speakers. I sit 9 feet away from a 46" TV, with my speakers pulled out a bit from the walls, they are 8 feet from my ears. If I sat closer to my TV, like is suggested, then I'm too close to the speakers. Do I have to have a 75" TV to sit at the correct distance and not be too close to my speakers?

All the graph is saying, basically, is that the further you are from your TV the less resolution matters. If you sit 9' away from your TV you need a 140" screen to get the benefits of 4Kafterburnt wrote: »They didn't speak a word of English, they were from South Carolina.

"If you CURVE IT they will pay!"
Actually, I do understand the idea of the curve. But as pointed out above, it would only be worth it if we were talking a MASSIVE screen, one that actually did wrap around you to the point where it met your peripheral vision. Imagine how big that would be? Now that would be something! But I don't think most of us will be able to afford that soon.
However, I would imagine that they will eventually produce a projector that would not need a screen and have a focal point that would allow you to simulate a virtual curved surface. That would also be interesting.
But for now. It's just gimmicky. Like curved phones?

I guess that curved TVs are not too different than widescreen computer monitors becoming the norm when 99% of all content for them is taller than it is wide, just like a book. We got so accustomed to scrolling that no one ever considered that if contents of webpages were actually make to fit, our internet experiences could be vastly improved. If we had a swivel monitor that would display either way, like our phones can, we would be gold. The best of both worlds.HT Optoma HD25 LV on 80" DIY Screen, Anthem MRX 300 Receiver, Pioneer Elite BDP 51FD Polk CS350LS, Polk SDA1C, Polk FX300, Polk RT55, Dual EBS Adire Shiva 320watt tuned to 17hz, ICs-DIY Twisted Prs, Speaker-Raymond Cable

They're not going to stop and neither will audio manufacturers. I see 25.1 surround in the not too distant future. It will bring you that much closer to the theater experience.

That curved screen design reminds me of the old Cinerama idea with the curved screens back in the late 50's or early 60's. It too, kinda came and went.
