Transport of SDA SRS 2.3TL Speakers - Recommendations?

can anyone provide any information on transport do's/don't's for a pair of SDA SRS 2.3TL speakers?

I have a smaller Toyota Tacoma that I was planning on using to transport, and I think I remember reading a while back that the SDA speakers should be transported on their backs? by the time I get them wrapped and padded properly, they won't both fit in the bed on their backs; it's not wide enough between the wheel wells according to my measurements.

Do I need to find another way?

How far do you need to transport? If you have just a short trip, pad everything up really good use two or three 2 by fours as spacers and stack them on there backs and tie down with movers straps. If you have to travel a long distance buy a friend a case of beer and gas money to take you.
I don't know if anyone has tried this so use your better judgement.Just a thought

Hey Dan, thanks for the input!

yeah, it's about 3.5 - 4 hours each way by interstate; approx 220 miles.

that's a good idea, and funny you mentioned the 2x4's, because I was just thinking about building a rack of some sort (that's me; overkill. I don't plan to stain it, though :)) exactly as you described, using 3 2x4's as supports, cinching the rack to my truck corners and the speakers to one of the members of the rack? and sort of sliding the speakers into the rack? hopefully the owner will help me with this :)

that, or renting a hearse? if no one rents them, I suppose I'll have to orchestrate a murder between here and my destination and hitch a ride.

Why would you think face down is better than on their backs? The magnets are in a horizontal position either way and face down will result in damaged grills, that's for sure.

Besides, I don't recall hearing of a magnet shift problem with the TL models.

I moved 1Bs 250 miles in a 1980 Honda Civic hatchback. A Tacoma should be no problem.

Put a scrap piece of speaker wire between the + and - terminals on each speaker. Speaker drivers won't flop around that way.

Moved a pair of 1.2TL's from Atlantic City to Iowa (~1100 miles) last month in a Toyota Highlander. One flat on it's back and the other on it's side. I had adequate padding and they travelled great. No issues due to transporting them. Hope you have the same luck bringing your new speakers home- and I hope you enjoy them as much as I 'm enjoying mine!

Get a U-Haul trailer (preferably enclosed, in case of rain) and pull it with the Tacoma. Put the speakers on their backs on top of some moving blankets/pads on the floor of the trailer. Easy peasey!

Local (pick-up and drop off at the same facility) trailer rentals for one day are usually about $25-$35.

The idea of building a rack for the back of your truck sounds like a PITA project too and considering the cost of the materials needed and the time involved, it's pretty much a no-brainer to go the trailer route.

I picked mine up 200+ miles away and laid them on their backs side by side in my Ford Escape. I put pillows between them to keep them from banging together and a pillow just below the BP cup so the BP's wouldn't get damaged.

    No problem!

2.3TLS use all Mw6510 so even if it did happen (mag shift) they are still available. I would put them on their sides well padded all round and pick the smoothest route, take your time.

I fit mine side by side in the back of a Honda element using bricks to elevate over the wheel humps. See link for a picture from my pickup adventure. . It may be easier to rent or borrow a vehicle.

In normal use, we put current through the voice-coil, in the magnetic gap, to make the driver move. We use the conductor and magnetism to produce movement--we use it as a motor.

By creating a circuit between the + and - terminals with a scrap of speaker wire or any other conductor, we use the conductor-and-magnet as a generator, the circuit and back-emf tend to reduce cone motion.

    So I've been told, anyway.

thanks! yeah, I'm really looking forward to checking them out! I hear that these should be a pretty big improvement over my already relatively pleasing setup.

pickup is scheduled for Friday aft; will post up once I get back home and settled. rest of my place is in reno, so I may just post up some photos of speakers and not of them in action. just so I don't embarrass myself :) surely I can't be the only one with out of whack priorities? orrrr are my priorities exactly in whack? :)

ooh, yeah, this is a good idea; wonder what enclosed ones cost... yeah, I'm not too excited about all the other transport prep work at this point, but mostly just due to my workload this week and my shrinking window of opportunity to get everything prepped in time in order to leave promptly and miss the bad Friday afternoon traffic.

were they on their backs or sides?

my other option is to possibly transport in a sport wagon-ish type vehicle, side by side, but it would have to be on their sides. I do remember reading something about mag shift hence recommendation for transport on backs, but I'm picking up from the experts that this may not be an issue with these particular models. I'm thinking this option would be the easiest, and probably more cushy option of the two. thinking that the car chassis will offer a softer ride than strapped to a 2x4 frame in a truck bed, even with adequate padding. truck takes some brutal hits sometimes.

whad'yous think about that? is the side-travel a completely bad idea?

thanks for all the input on this, fellas, much appreciated.

I transported my 2.3TLs in a pick-up, on their backs, over a bed of foam rubber 3" thick to absorb the shock of the occasional pothole in a stiff suspension vehicle. No magnets were shifted upon arriving home after a 40mi. trip. Great speakers BTW ! (c:

thanks! man, this is one instance I wish I had a full size pickup - my bed's a little narrow between the wheel wells, and just shy of the space I think I'd need. I've got something like 40" and some change, which won't leave any room for packing, and I think I need minimum 42".
I'm going by the dimensions on the product page here - http://www.polkaudio.com/products/sdasrs23tl

I'm a little concerned about interstate highway speeds with these guys in the back, anyway. it'll be 75mph most of the way, and there's some unavoidable nasty construction on both my main routes options home. I'm talking like the kinda stuff that bounces you into another lane. stuff seems to take a beating back there in the bed sometimes, so I'm gonna try to squeeze them into a sport wagon option instead, on their sides. it's gonna be tight. picking up Fri, so gonna properly measure tomorrow and get everything planned out.

yeah, I'm really excited to get them hooked up and properly auditioned. should prob take requests from the neighbors since they'll be "enjoying" them along with me, hehe :)

I wrapped mine in cellophane wrap and I had to put them on their sides into the honda fit as there was camping gear.
I drove carefully, avoiding bumps all the way home for 3 hours and they were absolutely fine without a scratch on them.

I drove all my speakers home in my 92 Ford explorer. All I did for protection was to wrap them in moving pads ans set them on their backs.
The 3.1's and 2.3s were easy. They fit with no trouble at all.
But the SRT system filled the entire inside of the explorer. The friend I went with had to have the control unit (in it's box) in his lap all the way from San Diego back up to Los Angeles. And both his passenger seat and my drivers seat were as far forward as humanly possible. I could barely breath, let alone steer.
Everything from each move arrived in perfect condition.

I transported my srs 2.3's using a Toyota 4Runner, and had < one inch to spare width wise. I had them on their backs and used high density foam packing material as a base which locked them down from sliding.... Drove them home and they didn't even move. I could not even imagine shipping them it would cost a fortune.... it cost me about $85 in gas and tolls.
