7.2 or 9.2?

I bought an Emotiva XPA-3, 200 watts x 3. It's an entry level amp, but it's what I could afford and my preference was to buy new. You could get a nicer amp at this price point if you'd like to go used I'm sure. It wasn't that the amp brought more power per se that made things sound better, it's clarity and nuances at lower volumes that inceased. It does what I need it to do, so I'm quite content.
You may be quite happy with a Pioneer running everything in your system, but I'd still strongly suggest you get one with multi channel pre outs for down the road... -
Nice looking amp. Amazon has it for $800. Btw, my current AVR (Pioneer VSX-1018AH-k) does have pre-outs across the board. I wonder why a good number of their newer models reduced this to only the fronts?Pioneer SC-1523-K and VSX-1018AH-K; Polk Monitor 75T Fronts, Pioneer S-HF11C Center, Cerwin Vega VE-5M surrounds and backs; Polk PSW-505 with Mediabridge SW cable; Onkyo SKW-204 with Mediabridge SW cable; Oppo BDP-103; Akai GX-255 Open Reel.

At the risk of not reading back through this thread, was there a specific reason you wanted to upgrade over what you have now? If it's power and not features, you might want to consider adding an amp to your existing AVR.

Well, I currently have a 7.1 (although I'm splitting the sub out and running two SWs) I was interested in the SC-1523 as an upgrade for the following reasons: I want to be ready for 4K resolution when I upgrade my big screen (currently 55" Sharp Aquos LCD) and possibly 3D. My Oppo 103 is already waiting for that. Second, I want to try bi-amping and the extra Zone 2 outs can be utilized on the 1523 and still retain 7.1. Third, I like the class D3 concept and efficiency. And four, I really want the SABRE32 DACs on the 1523. The only drawback(or more appropriately, "Stepback") I can see on the 1523 is that they only give you Pre-outs for the fronts whereas my old (current) VSX1018 gives me Pre-outs across the board. So what would you recommend? Any other options that stay around $800 and give me most of the upgrades I'm looking for? Not really looking for a class A/B amp tho.Pioneer SC-1523-K and VSX-1018AH-K; Polk Monitor 75T Fronts, Pioneer S-HF11C Center, Cerwin Vega VE-5M surrounds and backs; Polk PSW-505 with Mediabridge SW cable; Onkyo SKW-204 with Mediabridge SW cable; Oppo BDP-103; Akai GX-255 Open Reel.

Sounds like we have a lot of the same equipment, lol. I have the Oppo 103 as well, and am running 2 subs. My SC-61 has 2 sub inputs, but I believe they're internally "Y"d as the MCACC Pioneer calibration only recognizes one sub, so it may not be too different than what you're doing now. If you're looking at the 1523, might as well look at the SC-XX series as well. A few more bucks but a few more features as well, and pre outs across the board. I don't think you'd go wrong with Pioneer. Go to their web site and read up on ALL of the models. Scour places like Amazon and Newegg for new prices and maybe eBay etc for used.

Ok, that's what I'll do then. Thanks for the advice TR. Have a good one.
Update: Ok went to Pioneer Website and the Elite Receivers that are listed: SC-71, 2, 5, 7, and 79. Now get this. I go to Amazon and look up the SC-75 because that's the closest to the 1523 and guess what it says?
"There is a newer model of this item: Pioneer SC-1523-K 9.2-Channel Network A/V Receiver
LOL. So it looks like the SC series are now renamed and the SC-1523-K is the new SC-75. Now the SC-75 on the Pioneer website is going for $1600 and the 1523 on Amazon is going for $800. Hmmm, I wonder which is the better buy...LOL.Pioneer SC-1523-K and VSX-1018AH-K; Polk Monitor 75T Fronts, Pioneer S-HF11C Center, Cerwin Vega VE-5M surrounds and backs; Polk PSW-505 with Mediabridge SW cable; Onkyo SKW-204 with Mediabridge SW cable; Oppo BDP-103; Akai GX-255 Open Reel. -
Oh, and the SC-1523 DOES have across the board pre-outs. So, there's nothing else to look at. That's the one.Pioneer SC-1523-K and VSX-1018AH-K; Polk Monitor 75T Fronts, Pioneer S-HF11C Center, Cerwin Vega VE-5M surrounds and backs; Polk PSW-505 with Mediabridge SW cable; Onkyo SKW-204 with Mediabridge SW cable; Oppo BDP-103; Akai GX-255 Open Reel.

I'd like to at least try the 7.2 with biamp-ed fronts setup just to see if it sounds better.
Forget that idea. It's NOT bi-amping, period. So it looks like the SC series are now renamed and the SC-1523-K is the new SC-75. Now the SC-75 on the Pioneer website is going for $1600 and the 1523 on Amazon is going for $800.
That info on Amazon is misleading to say the least. The SC-xx models are the Elite line, the 4 digit models are not. Therefore, it is not the replacement for the SC-75. I mean come on man, you really think the $800 AVR is better than the $1600!?!Political Correctness'.........defined

Someone posted this for me once because I was asking how the model order went on the SC units. I just can't remember who posted it, but I thought it was worth saving to my computer...
The 05 and 07 were the first SC models. The ones with 4 digits are their lowest of the SC models for those given years and more like the VSX models than the SC ones. So you normally want to get a model with 2 digits as those are the "true" Elite models IMHO.
The VSX are the lowest of the Elite models.
I think its something along the lines of the first number denotes how "new" they are and the second number denotes how "high" on the chart they are. IE. 05 and 07 out same year, 07 is better. 27 and 37 are newer, 37 is better.

The Pioneer website has the 1523 listed the same price as the SC-75: $1600

F1, if you could show me the significant differences that warrant spending the extra $800, other than getting the name badge of a SC-XX model, I'd be willing to consider it. I looked at the website specs of both and they are pretty close.
And why is it not bi-amping? Just because it's not a separate external amp? I'm willing to learn at my old age, so please explain it to me. I may wait before I get anything, to see what models will use the new HDMI 2.2 standard. Getting something now with the new HSMI on the horizon woud be foolish, I think.Pioneer SC-1523-K and VSX-1018AH-K; Polk Monitor 75T Fronts, Pioneer S-HF11C Center, Cerwin Vega VE-5M surrounds and backs; Polk PSW-505 with Mediabridge SW cable; Onkyo SKW-204 with Mediabridge SW cable; Oppo BDP-103; Akai GX-255 Open Reel.
