SDA 1C Question

Have my SDA 1c's apart to dynamat, seal etc. Noticed that there are 2 pieces of dacron rolled up positioned behind the 4) 6.5 drivers, one on either side of the brace. There is nothing behind the tweeters or the passive radiator. I am pretty sure having nothing down on the bottom is correct but all my other Polk speakers have dacron on the top behind the tweeters. Shouldthere be dacron rolled up behind the tweeters??

Hmm. I wonder where it went. Parts Express the best place to order some from?

I replaced the stock polyfill in my SRS 1.2s with Accosta Stuf from Parts Express. Works fine. You just have to determine the right amount to use. Unlike BKphoto, above, I do not think you can just use as much as will fit in the cabinet. If you get too much, I think it dulls the sound.

However, others on this Forum can give you more experienced advice than I.

First Guess: Nobody removed any Dacron. It's just compressed. You don't need "more", you just need to re-distribute the rolls.

I don't think it is compressed. My 10's and 12's have more dacron in them than these. Just trying to find out from others that have a set of 1c's if this is normal.

My 1Cs, which I bought new in 1989 and never opened up till the last year when I mod'd them, each had one cylinder shaped roll of polyfill that was placed in the center of the cabinet from the lowest point in the cabinet behind and between the MWs to the top of the cabinet behind the tweeters.

I can't tell whether you have more than was in my 1Cs or it has simply fallen so that is only behind the MWs and on the sides, rather than in the center of the cabinet.

Bruce, I wouldn't over-think it too much. As long as the Dacron is behind the two woofers on each side, I think you'll be fine. The bottom of the roll should be no lower than the bottom of the lower woofer opening. Tack it in place so it doesn't slide down, and move on to the rest of the upgrades.

I would tend to agree with Westmass on this. Especially if you are going to use any black hole in the upgrades. The dacron appears to be in place primarily to help slow/ prevent reflections from bouncing back into the cones of the midwoofers. Cabinet fill can alter the "effective internal volume" by slowing the backwave but dacron does not perform theis function very well unless packed pretty tightly. I would use what you have and add the black hole which will make much more of a difference.
