Peerless manufactured dozens upon dozens of tweeters, your best bet is to keep an eye on eBay for a pair like the original

The date on the back of the peerless tweeter is 1990 any idea which model I would need to look for? Thanks
  • It's a little odd that one speaker has a peerless tweeter and the other has silver Polk tweeters. I don't think they are drop-in replacements for one-another. You may want to figure out what series you actually have before deciding which tweeters to go with.

I won't post links because of link-rot but this is what I would do:

If the Peerless tweeters are the original ones, I would probably just buy a set of the clones readily available from midwestspeakerrepair.com (p/n MT-4115) or simplespeakers.com (p/n T-K010DT). I say a set because, even if the tweeter you have on hand is working, I would replace both to ensure a balanced sound.

If the silver tweeter is the correct one, Polk sells a drop-in replacement for those that is supposed to be better than the original (RD0194-1). I think you can buy directly from Polk, or you you can, you know, google it. Actually, it looks like midwestspeakerrepair.com sells these too.

So I was way off on the date, I don't know where I got 1990 from here are a couple of picks to help you advise me accuratly. One is a pick of the back of the middle speaker and the other is a pick of the back of the peerless tweeter both pulled from the same speaker. Here are the numbers from the back of the speakers; 7 22422 and 7 22423r7dul5waltc5.jpg

So I'm thinking I need to look for an SL1000 to replace the silver tweeter on the other speaker with a peerless is that correct and do I need to pay attention to the date on the replacement tweeter? Thanks.

Polk sent out SL1000 Tweeters as warranty replacements for the Peerless, after they ceased production. It's entirely possible both speakers originally had Peerless. Examine both crossovers carefully to make sure the component values are the same. If they are, I'd opt for a salvaged Peerless of eBay.

Thank you I appreciate the gesture. I have a pair of Polk S4's I bought for about $10 at a thrift store and one is louder then the other. Any ideas? Thanks.

As to the polk 7's I think I just need to find a peerless tweeter that was put out the same year my speakers were made which was 1979 which is basically a waiting game. What do you think?

Do a saved search on ebay for Polk Peerless. Every time one is listed, you'll get an email.

This one might be about the right vintage. You could ask the seller. It's priced a wee bit high but might work for you. https://www.ebay.com/itm/Polk-Peerless-Tweeter-original-out-of-Model-Monitor-7A/174191723562

Always a good to first verify your upline components/speaker wire by swapping the speakers channel to channel and see if the issue follows the speaker or if it stays on the channel in question. If it does stay with that channel, then you have a problem upline of the speaker itself.

One thought if the issue is in the speaker: I haven't personally seen magnet shift on S4's before, but it's possible. If so, then that will result in greatly reduced volume, maybe even no sound from the midwoofer. If you press on the driver lightly with your fingers and it doesn't move, it is possible that the magnet has shifted, pinching the voicecoil between the magnet and pole piece. I've repaired older Polk MW's using a jig, it is possible to repair the drivers if this is indeed the issue. Otherwise, it may be an issue in the crossover.

I didn't see anything separated are burnt on the crossover and one midrange pushes a little harder then the other so I'm guessing the speaker is the culprit. I don't love em enough to replace the speaker so I'll probably just donate them to good will are my church's lot sale this summer. Thanks for the reply.
