I just pulled out all my NAD gear and Installed my Pioneer Elite SC-68. The SC-68 has been in the basement with me considering selling it as I don't really plan on using it anymore. I will say this, it's a beast of a receiver. It's got monstrous power and grace. It's pretty shocking how close it comes to my NAD gear which by the way cost almost 3x more. More like 4x as you have to consider Analog Interconnects between the pre and amp, the external DAC with it's analog Interconnects and 2 power cords so yeah well over 3x the cost and it's very close. I hate to admit it but I'm pretty sure the Elite wins the value angle by a wide margin. It's not even close not to mention it sync's with my Kuro TV much better then the NAD preamp does. When I switch inputs on the T187 , the TV bugs out , has crazy lines , purple green and crazy stuff happens before it sync's back. The SC-68 just goes blank then a picture appears. Much better IMO.
2 channel performance is where the NAD starts to pull away just a bit but for movies It's to close to tell at the volumes I watch at which is under reference levels. I enjoy keeping my hearing into my older age.
I'm a bit crushed honestly about Pioneer. I grew up in this industry loving their gear. I remember many years ago when the KURO hit the market and I just sat and wished one day I could afford such perfection in video.
I also owned the first ever combo player in DVD SACD DVD AUDIO in the DV47a. I waited so long for that to come out and I purchased the first one we got in stock ( I was with Soundex at the time).
My very first surround receiver was a Pioneer which I have sitting on my desk at work. It's just Dolby surround. I gave it to a friend who then used it for many years. He had it sitting around and asked if I would like to have it back. I'll never plug into it again but it might make for a good Museum piece.

Aren't receivers and speakers the only thing Pioneer still makes for the home A/V market? I know they made a deal with Sharp back in 2009 to manufacture all their optical disc players.

Pioneer's been going down for a while.

Sharp and Pioneer have had Joint ventures in the past well before 2009. The Sharp Pioneer Blu ray players sucked ****. All the way up tot the BDP-52 sucked ****. Pioneer from what I heard never confirmed the BDP-63FD is supposed to be built by Pioneer So I picked one up for the hell of it and stuck it into my system to demo and test. So far so good it has been through 9 seasons of Smallville and many Blu ray movies , SACD's and a DVD AUDIO disc. No hiccups like the BDP-52 that I had for awhile , that one sucked ****.

To me Pioneer Elite Receivers are the best in the business at their price points. I currently own Separates and a Elite SC-68 and I'll go on record to say it's damn close.
I hate to no end this is going on.

I have the new SC77 and it is awesome. I've been using Pio since the beginning of their IceAmps. Sux to see them go. The AVRs are really that good.

I'm with you man. I own the SC-68 and had the SC-07 prior. Both are fantastic units with the SC-68 being superior in many ways. They are the first to put a USB DAC in for Computer music A to B style. That's what took me over the edge to upgrade to the SC-68 over the SC-07 which stayed in my system way to long( for me) but not really as I loved that AVR.

The Sharp "Elite" LED TVs were excellent but they were expensive. The 60" was $5,000 and the 70" was $7,500. The picture was second to none at the time though and rivalled the Kuro plasma.

I'm just glad Pioneer produced the Elite SC-09TX and the BDP-09FD before they went down the tubes. I guess that was the peak and is probably a factor in the decision to divest themselves of the AV gear since the SC-09TX first came out in 2007 at the start of the Great Recession and didn't sell very well.

    It's a shame.

Talk about stuck in time. If a middle of the road unit from the 70s-80s is all one needs then....the need is not much!

Three and a half decades later....they are making av products just as good as the next guy...they just happen to sell a lot more car audio.

Eh....everyones audio journey has to start somewhere. As long as your willing to take that first step or even consider a journey to learn and listen.

However, in this case....I think the only journey in mind is getting to 100 posts to view the FM.

Looks like that's mostly aimed at the DJ market? And who knows how LONG a production run it will have. Small batch production is the norm these days. You make it, then you shift your labor and facilities to somewhere cheaper and run a different batch there and then another until it's no longer profitable and then you just close out that division!

JVC, Kenwood, etc. No longer around, or only around as Car Audio. Is that the future?

Oh, and SOUNDBARS are everywhere. You don't need to do anything there. Hook the bar to your TV and set up the wireless sub and you have OK but not REAL HT 7.1 or 9.2 sound. Even Walmart sells BARS! lol. What a situation for those of us who might want to run something more.

Small batch, if it's any good, then it would hold it's value.
But it looks DJ that's what most people want (to be cool).

It's about generating as much profit as possible to satisfy expectations of shareholders and the number of SKU a manufacturer has in a market segment. In today's world, it's not about good engineering or sound quality....just look at Apple's $3 billion purchase of Beats.

A lot of this is still trickle down from the housing market crash. It really hurt from everything from the toaster, home security, AV electronics, furniture market etc.

Another reason to cut corners in manufacturing. PC computer monitors are built really cheezy....

Doesn't sound like a company going out of the AV business.

Sad! When I was in College, early 80's big Pioneer gear was all the rage. I can remember a guy saying that he was going to have a problem when he retunred to school in the Fall because he planned to have a bigger stereo system and a smaller car.

Where are you all getting your info from? The only press releases from Pioneer that I see concerning new products, including speakers, are for CAR division equipment (that market is stable, people will always need stereo in their cars--Kenwood and JVC went that route a while back--why not Pioneer? They're a HUGE player in that market--they could still phase out everything else and keep car audio).
