I am not into home theater and got out of the audio biz before it became the big deal but i know a guy who is thinking of using all SDAs in a 7.1 channel app. To me this seems like a bad idea. Maybe I am wrong. Please advise. Thanks

It would work if you didn't hook up the SDA cable on anything but front mains. Having said that, it seems like a huge waste of SDAs! I would use SDAs as front mains and then monitors or RTA-12s on everything else if set on a vintage Polk HT. I actually did this one time using 1Cs for the front mains and RTA-12Bs for rear surrounds. While it sounded great, my consious always told me I should have been doing them justice in a 2 channel rig. Eventually I listened to my consious.

There was a member years ago named Tyronne that had an all SDA HT rig. Looking at his pics, it definitely had the cool factor, but I never heard it.

That said, the SRT system was outstanding for HT (and music), so if done right I don't see why an all SDA rig wouldn't work.

I have SRS 1.2TL's for mains, and the rest of my setup will be the AB700's and AB800's, which use the same doped-paper drivers the SDA's did. I plan on running the RDO-198's in them as well(if I can)...

Bottom line is that the SDA-SRS work beautifully as mains in an HT rig, but I see no need to run SDA on all nine channels.

I just cannot see how it would sound right. In fact in thinking about how SDAs need to be setup in front just for two channell I would think of 7 them would sound weird or just wrong. Take the sides for example, How would that work? Theywould be facing your ears and the SDA effect would fire into the right and left rear corners. Then the rear ones would also fire the SDA effcet into the righ and left rear corners. More going on behind you then in front?

As mentioned above, the only way it could sound good, or "right", would be for it to be done with ONLY the front SDAs having their interconnect cable in place.

I could see using SDAs as fronts and rears and a pair of monitor 5s or better for a center channel. You would want to make sure the front and rear SDAs were set up as they are supposed to be, but for the rears you would want to swap the right and left speakers to opposite sides the the dimensional drivers were in the right spot. You would more than likely end up with a decent system for multiple listeners, but would have a hell of a kicka$$ system in the sweet spot.

If he already has/owns the speakers, I say rock on, I would even play with using the SDA cable on the sides and rears, it's not going to hurt anything, and we are talking HT not rocket science..

My current system uses 2ATLs for the fronts (double duty for Home Theater and Two channel), a custom center, and Monitor 4.6s and 5jrs for sides and rear. At one point, I did use my CRS+s for the rears in a 5.1. When you were in the sweet spot between the two pairs, it was outstanding, 360 degree wrap-around sound-field. Unfortunately, this was not the case for everyone else. As soon as you move out of the sweet spot, the rear field collapses. The fronts are not as critical, since the center channel locks the dialog and many of the effects directly on screen. When I upgraded to 7.1, I used multiple pairs of Monitors in a bi-pole configuration. Since they're diffuse point sources, the surround sound field never collapses.

I use mine as fronts in a 7.1 system. My next upgrade is to a 120 inch acoustically transparent screen and PJ. They will be behind the screen . Probly a waste in some respects. I plan on keeping them forever. Some day if and when space allows. I will dedicate them to a two channel set up. I searched for the best pair for two years and found them in my own suburb. So I feel that Karma or they are a gift from God. Plus all the BS I put up w from the wifey. Some things are worth fighting for! Peace. D
