Question for any of our gearheads.

Im having a little roughness from our 04 highlander, its faint, usually as its stopped and idling.

Im going to pull the maf sensor tomorrow and spray clean it, should i worry about using a can of spray labeled for that use from a parts store, or just hit it with deoxit, which i have read is just fine.

Im going to be replacing the plugs soon, as these are the originals with 10 years and 138,000 miles on them.

I have never laid eyes on a coil pack, much less pulled one to replace a plug, would hate to booger one up, have you seen the price of those babys.

thanks in advance.

    Thank you sir,will do both.

This year was the last for a chain, glad of that.

Any other basic maintenance that is reasonable at this mileage, have heard opinions both ways.

The oil residue left behind from the deoxit will cause the meter to be off and cause very poor mileage

Do NOT use Deoxit on a MAF sensor, that isn't the right stuff, they make cleaners specifically for those and it's advisable to get it. I am a mechanic and know of where I speak of, the wrong cleaner on that sensor will leave a residue and render it even worse than before the cleaning.

And yeah, doing the plugs will have a very noticeable effect, nothing like a simple tune-up to make it run better. Also, does this Toyota happen to have a timing belt? If so, might be time to have that changed as well.

the only thing i have used de-oxit for on my cars were electrical connections; ie- fuse boxes, sparkplug wires(waiting for new ones to come in, but it helped cleaning the old ones) battery leads, ground connections(after disconecting and cleaning corosion, same goes for bat. leads), leads to headlamps, etc. spark plugs i clean with a wire brush(or t-shirt), then diesel, the a rinse in gas, leave them to dry, and put them back in.

Ok, after cleaning a blackened maf sensor with crc maf cleaner back to its original amber red color, and driving it about 5 miles,it has not only smoothed out, but regained a substantial amount of horsepower.

Did not bother with deoxit on the connector, as it does not seem to need it.

Thank you all, and if you have never cleaned yours, there was nothing to this, 2 screws, unhooking the electrical connector, and spraying, replacing.

On our 04 highlander, it was right on top of the air line as it left the air filter box.

I saw where some like to either disconnect the battery for a few minutes or pull the efi fuse, in order to reset the computer and force it to take new readings, not sure if thats beneficial, but does not seem to be.

I use a number of the CRC products, though I've never tried their maf cleaner, thanks for the tip Scott.

You should probably notice an increase in mileage as well. Dirty MAF causes the car to run rich and sluggish.
