Lately when i go to turn off my Denon amp i get zapped. Thankfully the receiver has remote (but it does it also if i touch the button) My wife thinks it funny as heck to watch this. But i really dont. Almost as bad as a spark plug zap. Do i need to ad something to stop this. Dont want to hurt the system. Never noticed it till this spring a couple of weeks ago. Any suggestions would be helpful. TIA

Static electricity......touch some other chunk of metal before touching your gear.

Use Static Guard on furniture/carpets - raising the humidity level on my HVAC seemed to help as well.

Jesse- Wife said she wanted to watch me touch the machines in laundry room. LOL. It may be the recliners we just got. Static. Great ideas. Thank you all. I'll still keep the wife amused

Indoor Relative Humidity plays a large part, especially in the winter.

We got new couches this winter and I took a couple square hits before I figured it out as well.

If you hold a metallic object FIRMLY in your hand and tough that object to a metal surface, you will safely discharge static from your person without the painful jolt. I do it all the time when leaving home in the winter, where I have to touch the metal front door. I usually have the deadbolt key in hand as I'm leaving and use it to discharge static.

This also happened to me and the arc was so big big I was calling myself welderman. From what just about everyone said then and now it has to due to the relative humdity in your room and synthetic carpets (in my case) and you build up a charge just by moving around. It did hurt a bit and since the seasons have changed I no longer have the problem w/ the exception of an overly cold day and then the heat goes on. If it's a constant issue w/ you then like the guys say discharge yourself by touching anything else but your gear.

The microfiber recliner in my room creates some wicked static also. To avoid zapping my system, I built a device from an old Paradigm speaker footer that's wired to the center screw of a nearby outlet that is not on the same circuit as my system. Now before I touch any part of the system, I de-charge myself on that. It's like a mini lightning bolt. Actually hurts slightly, LOL.

It's pretty common for that to happen up here in the cold months, Randy. I fear every time I touch something metallic. What you need to do is figure out some way of STORING all that excess electricity you have so you can save a few dollars on those OUTRAGEOUS rates we pay to subsidize our friends in Boston. lol

Wear gloves, get some insulated gloves.

I jump when I get zapped, thankfully so far I've remembered to touch something metal before reaching for the tone arm. That could get expensive if I forget!
