My New Montain Bike Buddy

We Got my Grandson a new Mountain Bike his first a Trek 820, got him a helmet, gloves, water bottle, lock he's set took him 12 miles on the beginner trails he only crashed and burned twice but once he got it down and started riding the flows he was hooked so he will be tagging along now. A pretty good Easter for him. We got back and he is already sore.

Very cool, what trails are you doing in the area? I've been riding my bike on the trails within DSM, but haven't had a chance to venture out.

Warms my hearrt to see, its reassuring to actually see there are good folks thriving and teaching the young ones by example.

Right here in the QCA there are over 30 miles of trails in Davenport off river drive from beginner trails (green) somewhat difficult (blue) to difficult (black) then in Scott County Park 20 miles of trails through the woods. Then there's sugar bottom in Iowa city that's a friggen blast. So Cody you live in Urbandale? When did you move back to the motherland?

Way to go Steve. Get them good habits (exercise) started early.

Cody, some decent flat land stuff between Sycamore Access in Johnston and then down by the old Target on Euclid. Used to be 4x4 and dirtbike trails but have been mountain bike only for some time now.
The Ledges are also fun...when not inundated with hikers.

I've never ridden the trails at sugar bottom, but I've spent plenty of time there. Mostly on the disc golf course. I've been back for almost a month. Glad to be back in the Midwest.

I'll research both. I'm off of Hickman and 73rd. I've already set a goal to ride downtown and back this summer.

Killer man, I had my first ride this year, we finally had a warm enough day to get out there and enjoy a hard ride on the trails.
12 miles for his first ride, sweet man, 12 miles is a pretty hard ride especially doing any kind of technical riding. Usually my riding buddies and myself do about 10-15 miles technical , some days only 8 miles as some of the trails around here are tuff on you.
When I want to put in some miles, We have 2 awesome canal trails. One on the PA side and one of the NJ side. On the PA side I usually do 20-25 miles. On the NJ side it's a full on 30-35 mile round trip. I'm killed after one of those rides and I work my way up to them. I usually get in at least 5 to 10 rides in the beginning of the season before I go off on a long hike like that.

Love the Trek's man, excellent rock solid Mountain bikes with probably the best balance in the business. Every year I start out with a tour of the bike shops to see if this is the year I'm gonna get a new Bike. Trek is always one I look deeply into. I ride GT Avalanche series at 26 inch but now they have a 27 1/2 size and a 29er which both sizes offer better roll etc etc.

Congrats!! I love Trek bikes, great bang for the buck and great build quality - did some crazy stuff on my 3500 back in the day.

Ever since Maria has a spill on her bike in 2011 and broke her jaw we ride together on friendly trails. I ride alone ont he technical trails. Way to break your grandson in.

I created a monster poor kid he's getting more like me. We went for another 12 mile green trail ride yesterday. I loaded up his mp 3 player with Bon Scott AC/DC, early era Megadeth and Metallica, and some Schenkner era UFO, and we went 15 miles of Paved bike path he kept up. All he does now is read my mountain bike mags and wants to get another bike it's a hobby like our audio one you just can't get enough he asks why I have 3 bikes and why I am looking at a new 29er, I just tell him that's how it is.

He also likes the Music I listen to, and he talked me out of an old Onkyo Reciever a pair of Polk T-15s and a technics CD player I had in storage and a Yamaha acoustic guitar. It's better than watching tv he says, I told him he's to young for Club Polk and to wait till he gets some better gear to give it another 10 years to do some upgrading.

Well yesterday we hit the green trails he was leading my friend and I followed, well he learned the hard way he thought he mastered Ferndale, so he decided being leader he would hit kickapoo a blue trail well he learned confidence is a mother, as on kickapoo down he did not make it between to trees with a sharp corner and a drop his handle bar hit one of the trees and he crashed and burned pretty bad, took him a while to come to his senses but the little guy straightened out his handle bars and we finished kickapoo down.

I then asked him if he wanted to do it again he said no thanks, he returned home with some scrapes and bruises his pride hurt a bit but the little sh#t wants to go this afternoon green trails only. He saw a bunch of bikes on the trail and already has upgradeitis I told him let's beat this one first and when you get some more experience under your belt will see about an upgrade. But today we are gonna get a handle bar mount for his Go-Pro and get some of his epic crashes on film

That's awesome!!!! It looks like you have a new riding partner. And yes, overconfidence will rise up and bit you in the @ss every time.

My 20 yr old daughter asked me if she could have my old rigid frame Trek 850 and I told her by all means yes, and I'd be happy to do some restoration to it if she even thought she'd be interested in riding it.

It almost went to the local bike co-op the day before.
