Are Polk subs any good?

Or should I be looking at a different brand?

Depends on what you're looking for.

The PSW 505 is actually a very good budget sub, budget sub being under $500. You have to keep in mind that Polk is a speaker company that happens to make subs. Subs aren't their main focus, so get a little less attention.

Want a good sub, go to a sub company. SVS, HSU, Power Sound Audio, and Velodyne make very good moderately priced models, $500 to $2K range. Velodyne DD series can be pricey, but they offer a quite a few moderately priced models. These are sub companies, SVS happens to be a sub company that makes speakers, for instance.

Polk's DSW series are fairly good sounding subs. Never heard their Micropro series, but haven't heard of many complaints as far as performance.

I have heard all manufacturers listed except Power Sound Audio and the Micropro. Just going by what I've read on those.

i kinda heard this about polk too....i own a polk sub too...lol...but upgrading also....i heard hsu research is a good choice....im thinking of the stf-2 myself....

Nothing but glowing reviews about the polk micropro series. I want to try one in the future.

Micropro subs rock....try Sunfire or Velodyne for superior performance in a realistic budget. Look into the Deckware Home Wrecker if you can afford to play a bit and have the space to incorporate a new piece of furniture.

All good advice, but the most important question when sub shopping is what is the budget? Not much performance can be had in the $300ish range, but if your looking to spend $500 or perhaps more there are a TON of options...

So much depends on what cu.ft. of room space you're trying to pressurize. Many of us have an open floor design which combines the den, kitchen, living room and sometimes the rest of the house. I had to install an extra wall and doors to seal of my den (HT) from the rest of the house. I still had to pressure about 4000 cu. ft. To get good, clean, down to 20 hz. bass it's going to cost some extra bucks. I'm running 2 Epik Empire subs that cost me about $1800 total and I still would like a bit more low end. You're so right Cody, the budget is going to determine the amount and quality of bass you'll be satisfied with. To get good, quality bass down to 16 hz. will cost more, to get down to 8hz is really going to cost more. I'm not even sure if Polk makes a sub that can dig cleanly to 16 hz.

I went with SVS PB 2000. They are huge, btw...

We had the older PSW1000 sub and loved it, even though it was not the loudest or deepest bass sub overall, it has a Very clean musical sound, that was awesome on most music.

Of course the amp went bad recently, as we have read many do, and it is a paper weight in basement now...lol
