I am not a huge journey fan but I seem to be the pbs rock reference guy so heres another.

Arnel Pineda was a phillipino singer who came to the attention of the guys in journey through a you tube vid.

This show has the footage of his tryout for them, and at first he was worn down from the travel and fatigue and does not sound good, they could not understand why they even brought him over.

On the third day it was all there, and he really does have a great voice, kinda like steve perry had a son with a stronger voice.

Its on right now on atlanta pbs, tomorrow at 10pm, might be on yours.

I followed along with this story a while back and I'm not sure if it was the same PBS special I saw or not. If I remember correctly, Arnel was making his way through customs or immigration process and the agent asked him the reason for his entering the United States. He explained he was trying out for lead singer of Journey and the agent was like - yeah right, sing one for me. He did and Arnel made it through customs and the rest is history. What are the chances... you couldn't even make this stuff up if you tried.

Saw them in person a couple years ago. He is no Steve Perry. Foreigner kicked their butts that night.

It's called Don't Stop Believin': Everyman's Journey and Netflix has been streaming it for sometime now.

    From Netflix:

"This documentary presents the musical saga of Arnel Pineda, who goes from singing in Manila nightclubs to fronting the legendary rock band Journey. Brought into the group just before a world tour, Arnel must sell himself to Journey's many fans."
