Curious about Vinyl Collections

I just learned that a relatively new friend of mine is an audiophile who is and has been for years heavily (my judgement) into vinyl.
He has 3,000 to 4,000 records.
Is that typical of vinyl collectors?

Let me tell you I have a friend in Austin who is a vinyl collector, non-audiophile, no turntable, no sound system who collects only sealed albums. We hunt together and I have all ways asked him why....He likes the album art and the thrill of the chase. His collection is well over 2K albums.
I hope he puts me in his will2-channel: Modwright KWI-200 Integrated, Dynaudio C1-II Signatures

I have about 400-500 and the wife is telling me to slow my roll. I actually agree with her as about 150 of those have yet to be cleaned and listened to.2 ChannelTurntable - VPI Classic 2/Ortofon 2M BlueAmplification - Rogue Audio Cronus Magnum II, Parks Audio Budgie PhonoSpeakers - GoldenEar Triton 17.2 Home TheaterDenon AVR-X3300W; Rotel RMB-1066; Klipsch RP-280F's, Klipsch RP-450C, Polk FXi3's, Polk RC60i; Dual SVS PB 2000's; BenQ HT2050; Elite Screens 120"Man CaveTurntable - Pro-Ject 2.9 Wood/Grado GoldAmplification - Dared SL2000a, McCormack DNA 0.5 DeluxeCD: Cambridge AudioSpeakers - Wharfedale Linton 85th Anniversary; LSiM 703; SDA 2A

No idea - it depends on intent, taste, space, and resources, I would think.
FWIW, I've got about 3000 - many (still) need to be gone through, though...this is a prime retirement project.
I reckon when all is said and done I'll get down to about half that.
Probably about 1000 upstairs - these are 90+% keepers at this point; the rest are boxed in the basement (and semi-parsed).
... of course, I am listening to a CD as I type this ;-) -
I'm in the 350 range. When I started listening to vinyl again 2-3 years ago, I had around 30 which were in storage since my teen years.
-
I got back into vinyl about 4 years ago and have slowly been building my collection back up. It's presently in the 1200 to 1300 unit range. If you can't hear a difference, don't waste your money.
-
Ive got under 500/growing & ive heard of people owning 10,000 or more. I never wanna be that. Its ok if thats their thing. Id say 3-6000 tops. Enough to fill a small spare bedroom & add a nice cleaning machine to the mix, would be were id be happy. I really enjoy albums & glad i got back into them after 30+ years later..
-
Mine is around 250. It's small but slowly growing. I also have a CD collection of probably 100 or more. Not many are duplicates either. Oh yea I also collect Laserdiscs! Have 50 or so of them!HT/2Channel: Emotiva MMC-1, Adcom GFA-555II, Polk SDA 3.1's, Teac TN-300 TT, Polk Center and Sub.

So far, I've resisted getting back into vinyl after an absence of some 25 years, just as I have resisted the temptation to try some "tube" equipment.
It sounds like "sticking a toe in the water" can pretty quickly become a "plunge into another rabbit hole!"
I need to decide whether to rehab my old AR turntable just to give vinyl a bit of a listen or to give it to my friend, who will undoubtedly put it to good use!Family Room, Innuos Statement streamer (Roon Core) with Morrow Audio USB cable to McIntosh MC 2700 pre with DC2 Digital Audio Module; AQ Sky XLRs to CAT 600.2 dualmono amp, Morrow Elite Speaker Cables to NOLA Baby Grand Reference Gold 3 speakers. I'm sitting easy at 300-400. Still haven't quite decided how invested I am in this so it could get bigger.....or none at all.Where’s the KABOOM?!?! There’s supposed to be an Earth shattering KABOOM!!!

I've got about 1200 LPs, and picked up a collection of about 2500 45s for $100. The 45s are fun- all over the place from 60s-early 90s basically, I'll grab a stack and find a half dozen to spin. Of the LPs I'd say 250 get heavy rotation, the rest only occasionally. The only unopened one is the Beatles box set- I've got it on CD and ripped to flac and it's just easier to navigate using my digital streamer.Gallo Ref 3.1 : Bryston 4b SST : Musical fidelity CD Pre : VPI HW-19

One of the beauties of vinyl is it can be a pretty cheap hobby. I rarely pay more than $5 for an lp. Most are $3, $4 or less. And everyonce & a while you'll come across someone selling their entire collection of classic rock for next to nothing(stealth gloat). If I ignore the relatively small number of new pressings I've bought, which admittedly can be pricey, I've probably got less than $1000 into my collection.

A few times here I've read "getting back into vinyl".
I've never stopped buying LPs and have continued
add to my collection for the past 45 years. That has
a lot to do with the size of collection.

Pman i can definitely understand that. If i would have kept going in the early/mid 70's id have many today. Im a pack rat-say wife. She is not into albums. I was buying LOTS & at one time i had 1500 & it was climbing quick. With alot of music i didnt listen to. Some i know i would never touch. So i went through every one & sold/gave away alot of albums. I would like to get my collection around where your at by the time im 60 in 10 years. Just in time to enjoy them. Its nice to have a variety of albums to pick from. I enjoy vinyl..

I'm around 2000 with maybe 50 audiophool pressings. Several hundred of them I have not listened to yet.Vinyl, the final frontier...

Never divested and never stopped buying/collecting the big black disks... well, slowed way down for a while when new ones were in short supply. My (erstwhile) favorite local emporium had a steady - if eclectic - supply all along, though.

I'm another re-noob getting back into vinyl..
Over the last 18 months I guess I've accumulated about 350-500 with the majority of them being used from a record store not Goodwill or Salvation Army not that they are worse I inspect and bring a brush a fluid with me..
I've purchased around 75 new ones that are on my most played list.
It was my vinyl journey that started my audio journey.ATC SCM40's,VTL TL 2.5 Preamp,PSB Stratus Goldi's,McCormack DNA 500,McCormack MAP-1 Preamp,Pro-Ject Xtension 10 TT,Ortofon Cadenza Red/Nordost RedDawn LS Speaker cables, Bryston BDP-2, Bryston BDA-2,PS Audio AC-3 power cables -
When I started about 5 years ago, I would go to the used store or garage sale and pick anything that I thought I might like. I quickly accumulated a stash of vinyl I didn't really listen to in horrible condition.
Now I'm much more "picky" (no pun intended). I pull every single record out and inspect it before even considering it.
When I started, I liked the "old vintage pops and clicks," but now I'm looking for the absolute best sound.
It's funny, now if I play a record with pops and ticks when friends are over, I'm thinking "Man, I need a new copy of this," but invariably, one of my friends will say, "Man old vinyl just sounds so cool."
I laugh until I think about it....wait, that's how I got into vinyl...2 ChannelTurntable - VPI Classic 2/Ortofon 2M BlueAmplification - Rogue Audio Cronus Magnum II, Parks Audio Budgie PhonoSpeakers - GoldenEar Triton 17.2 Home TheaterDenon AVR-X3300W; Rotel RMB-1066; Klipsch RP-280F's, Klipsch RP-450C, Polk FXi3's, Polk RC60i; Dual SVS PB 2000's; BenQ HT2050; Elite Screens 120"Man CaveTurntable - Pro-Ject 2.9 Wood/Grado GoldAmplification - Dared SL2000a, McCormack DNA 0.5 DeluxeCD: Cambridge AudioSpeakers - Wharfedale Linton 85th Anniversary; LSiM 703; SDA 2A -

About 2,500 on the racks (all cleaned and listened to at least once), 250 or so in boxes that are cleaned and have not been listened to yet, and about another 1000 in boxes that come from friends of mine who pick them up for a couple of dollars per box at auctions. I sold many of my lps from the '70's. I kept about 200. I got back into it about six years ago. My collection is probably around 1,500. Many are new, heavy weight vinyl. Others are garage sale finds and Of course Jerry's Records here in Pittsburgh.Carl
